Nate, please choose us for your next Dream Home

Posted on Feb 16, 2008 3:50 AM

Hello Nate,
I'm writing to you in hopes that you'll choose us to build our dream home. This is mainly for my husband, who deserves this wish so much. He is currently in Iraq on his 3rd deployment for the Army. This tour will be 15 months long, and he will retire when he gets home. He was the 1st group to go into Afghanistan and the 1st group to go into Iraq and he serves with honor, courage and integrity. Alot of soldiers have had a rough time like what my husband, Michael, is going through. His ex-wife used his name and credit via the Power-of-attorney that he had to give her when he deployed and left him in staggering debt that he had no knowledge of until he got home and was summoned to his superior to be told of the damage. At that time, his ex runs off with another military man and takes everything. This happens to so many soldiers. We have paid almost all the debt, but it ruined my husband's credit. He is due to retire in February 2009 and I'm terrified that after all he has done for our country, he will not be able to own a home. We have been married for almost 7 years and have been doing without alot so we could get the debt gone. Most of our furniture is things we were given to us, and we found a place on base where the military discards their old furniture that we fixed up. I don't want this to be a "pity us" situation, instead I want my husband to feel that if you spend your life sacrificing and live with good morals, integrity, and honor, then America will appreciate their soldiers and will give them a "Welcome Home" thanks, by helping a soldier when they can. We don't want or need a mansion. Just a 3 to 4 bedroom home in or near Venice, Florida, so we can be near his parents. Michael lost a sister to cancer. And has had 2 siblings get cancer while he was deployed, one of which is currently undergoing radiation treatments. It would be such a blessing for me and his family to see Michael come home to his own home and look forward to starting a new life in the country he has been fighting for, rather than worrying about where can we find a place to live. My husband's dream home would be environmently friendly. And he loves to garden and he paints landscapes on canvases as another hobby. He has a 15 year old son, Matthew, and an 11 year old that he treats as his own, so we are hoping they could have their own rooms so they know they are always welcome. I pray you choose us for your next "Dream Home" project. My husband truly deserves a place to call home. Thank you for your consideration.

Nate and Oprah, please also consider making a "renting appartment" make over show. You could do a few of those in 1 show :).

Dear Nate,

We have been married for 46 plus years. My husband is retired from the Air Force. He served for 20 years. We had 3 children during those years. After retiring we moved to The Dalles, Oregon. We have been here in this house since he retired in 1981. It is a little over 1100 sq ft. Our children are now all grown. Our youngest son lived with us until a few years ago. My husbands mother also lived with us off and on ...mostly on over the last 20 years. She finally moved into a adult care facility just over 2 years ago, as she has dementia. That left us by ourselves for the first time since our daughter was born. Then four months later, our daughter and her 2 girls moved in with us. At the time the girls were 3 and 13. Now they are 5 and 15. Our daughter qualified for the Habitat for Humanity house this year. So we think she should have a house in about a year. But in the mean time, she and the 2 girls are sleeping in a queen sized bed in a small bedroom. There are 2 bedrooms for them, but the smaller bedroom is so small that a bed doesn't fit in there. The closets are very small for them it is hard to move in the rooms. We only have one bathroom that is badly in need of a new tub surround.

In 2002 my husband was diagnosed with prostrate cancer and had to have surgery. He did radiation and also chemo. So far he hasn't had any reoccorance. In 2005 he found out he had bladder cancer. He has had treatments for this and a couple of reoccorances, that the doctor has been able to remove. So every 6 months he has to be rechecked. We are both retired and live on social security and his Air Force retirement. Our daughter works at Home Depot for the last year and half and of course does volunteer work for Habitat on both her days off. We love having her and the girls here with us. We would appreicate any help. Just the tub surround in the bathroom would be great or the Dream Home would be good too. Haha.

Thank You for your consideration.

I watched couple of Nate's house remodeling/ dream home show and I enjoyed them very much. And lately I have been day dreaming about him fixing my house. I told my husband that I am going to write a letter to Nate Berkus to help fixing my house and he yelled at me. Because I should not take advantage of someone who does good things for other people. Well, I agree with him although..... My house is falling a part and I try to get someone to fix locally and no one in town willing to work on my house .( too much of work and house need to be stained ?) When we bought the house we live in now was only few years ago. My husband and I did not know much about buying house becuase we ve been moving apartment to apartment and never had the kind of luxury of purchasing the house. of course we did not have enough knowledge to look for good house. Well, we bought a house that was bulit in 1996 and now it is falling a part. I am staying home mother with two kids. I don't really have a job but sometimes I have help my husband's work. My husband would like to have nice fixed inside and outside where he can actually think about inviting visitor or family... We have been going to bookstore to bookstore to get some idea but that is all. Physically, my husband doesn't have time to fix any of the stuff inside or outside house. I try to call the local handy man who worked on our house from previous owner but he doesn't want to work on our house. Well, maybe it is too stupid to ask for help................

Anyway, thank you oprah and nate for all your hard work to please everyone who are in need.
