What do you do when you lose everything in a heartbeat? Suze Orman helps a family in crisis mode. Could it happen to you? Make sure it doesn't.

Suzy made a big issue about the husband canceling the $300,000 life insurance policy. They had failed to mention and left something out in this episode. If someone commits suidide, there is no payment on a life insurance policy. They need to tell the wife and announce it to the public audition...

Sylvia looked so good without her makeup. How courageous for her to not only expose herself to the world but also to her own self!

I think it would have been important for Suze to inform the audience that when a person kills him/herself, life insurance companies will not not pay out money to beneficiaries in most, if not all, cases. I think that casts a slightly different light on the actions of Sylvia's husband. Clearly, it was nasty of him to have cancelled the policy without informing his wife, but it seems to me unlikely that he did it to rob her and his children of its benefits after he killed himself. It's been my experience that most people know that suicide ends an insurance company's contract to pay out.

I can't believe OPrah is allowing "Suze" to compare a dysfunctional family's experience with suicide to other common reasons people find themselves in deby, like divorce and the rest. To say something like "...and you couldn't even buy milk the next day.." is just TOO weird!!! First of all if she had $72 in the bank she COULD buy milk and not to mention cow's milk isn't anymore considered a necessary food staple....I dont understand why Oprah allows all these contradictions. Last time it was some sister and her mother/family, weening her off their assistance ONLY to end up with MORE help lol. I mean you asked that woman "Why did you ask her to help you get/fix a car?" and the obvious answer was she was trying to avoid the continuing downward spiral in this ridiculous service economy that holds so little real value for human energy....but you allow "Suze" to over power people with her damn personality! and put words in her mouth....oh ya and....this woman "Sylvia? I wouldnt be surprised if she staged her husbands death to look like a suicide. There is something creepy about her too...I bet the same producers who book "Suze" book Dr Phil? You can afford to take more chances with people Oprah....are you afraid of REALLy challenging yourself and making really exciting discoveries because of what peole will say? It's all just too damn shallow! Sorry to sound so mean. Im not I care more than anyone!!!

OMG I can't believe the look on her face when she said, "Money of course" and then to have that man commit to GIVING her 1000 a month, that's crap! I'm a single mother of 2 boys and don't receive any child support or public assistance. No one GIVES me anything. I am in debt right now $3000.00 to my landlord because of back due rent. (she's been understanding enough, but it's not like she's giving me rent free, it has to be paid back and the due date is with my tax refund) Even my own parents would make me sign a promissory note if I asked them for money. I've almost been homeless and they didn't reach out to help me. No matter how much I promised to "pay it forward"

Ophra and Suze have sensationalized today's show!
There are No life insurance policies that I know of that pay disbursemnts on the 'life' of a person committing suicide.
Why then do you 'paint' the picture that this poor soul would have been economically set w/the insurance payout from her husband's policy?

Eddie01 - If you haven't already, you NEED to either listen to the cd's or read the book called, "The Secret". I would suggest listening to the cd's. It's very calming. Oprah had an entire show about this and, coming from someone who didn't expect much from it, my world and my outlook on life changed. My sister purchased the cd's on amazon.com and my mom forced me to listen to them. I was at my lowest ever and the words I heard changed my thoughts about the negatives in my life. My heart goes out to you and I hope you take my advice. "The Secret" will help you to see things clearly and get your life on track and give you a reason for living, even at your lowest point. Good luck to you and your family.

Wow...my heart goes out to this woman. At this point I wish I could send her a check to help her out. IS THERE AN ADDRESS FOR THOSE OF US THAT WANT TO HELP OUT? I feel so bad. Women have got to be smarter as far as making better decisions. I would never marry a man that wanted me to stay at home. It's not in my character to do that and any man that deals me already knows the deal. I'm independent and will always be that way. I will always work unless of course I hit the lottery or I decide to stop working.I know all about abuse as I've watched my mommy endure it for many years. It's a good thing that Sylvia has the love and support of her family and friends. I just pray that God continues to bless her and keep her safe.

In Canada, the law protects dependent children when their fathers cut them out of insurance benefits and other testamentary benefits. Nothing goes out of the Estate, including proceeds of insurance, until an Executor or Court has assured itself that the needs of dependant children can be met. If that is not the case, they are compelled to take whatever money is necessary to ensure the proper care of such dependants, including taking up to 100% of any insurance policy, no matter who is named as the beneficiary. This is a good practice I think. Anyone can find a way to stop making payments on an insurance policy without a spouse knowing. Are you really going to ask your spouse to prove that the policy is in good standing on a monthly basis? I can't quite see that. Press for new legislation that protects children as well as protecting the life and well-being of their mother.

Yea, I agree. She was the wife, and certainly had some say in getting all that stuff that they bought....People just simply go out of control but she had 4 kids! Come on.
Also, Suzy talked about the $300,000 and made a deal out out of it that the husband canceled it and tended to lean toward the idea that she lost that money. But, she failed to say that if someone commits suidide, insurance companies usually don't pay out after that..Almost never.....So, that needs to mentioned to the audience and public.
I just heard that they had a big sale from contents in the house.

Social Security is paying her $2000 a month because she has 4 kids? How can that happen?

I started crying while watching this show. I had to leave a contolling husband and I can relate so well to how she feels now that she is free. I never admitted it out loud but I too was relieved when my husband attempted suicide. That event allowed me the opportunity to get out. Congratualtions, Sylvia on setting yourself free!

It is happening to me now. The abuse was so bad, he threatened to shoot me. That was Dec. 19th. I left the house
and trying hard to make it on my own. I am 57 and that makes it even worse, because I am not eligible for any help.
My husband went through all my savings, ($350,000) And I stood back and allowed it. I do not like myself very much
right now, but I am reading A NEW EARTH and it's helping. It's time to learn to Love Me.
