Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Doctors

Posted on Feb 18, 2009 9:09 AM

How does one go about finding a doctor that prescribes bio-identical hormones? Is there a website with doctor listings? The only
thing that I can find is fee based reports that may or may not include such information. Thanks!

I've heard of a doctor who does bioidentical hormones and BHRT in the Chicago area by the name of Maria Kraszynska MD.

People say she is very experienced in alternative medicine and bioidenticals.

Try doing a Google search for "Chicago Hormone Doctor". It looks like she has been doing this for many years.

Hope this helps! :)

Hi Norakl,

I am in Columbus Ohio. I have found one medical doctor who is in my insurance network but he doesn't seem to really know what he is doing with BHRT. I am on BHRT but would like to get on a natural thyroid hormone also and am having trouble with him moving forward on this. I just am not as comfortable with him as I would like to be. Do you know of any Doctors around this area who prescribe BHRT? You can send me an email at - faith100@live.com, if you have a spare minute and wouldn't mind doing so. Thank you so much in advance.

If you don't know of a doctor in my area, perhaps a medical group or health center? I would be willing travel several hours for that first visit.

Hi rkmegger,

I also am in Columbus Ohio, I have a doctor but I don't think he really knows what he is doing, I don't have much confidence in him. I've found several others but they don't accept insurance, I need one who does. Have you located anyone? You can contact me at faith100@live.com if you want. Perhaps we can exchange some information.

thanks

Several ladies that I have dealt with have had good experiences at the Menopause Center of MN, it's in St. Paul. I can't post the phone number, you will have to look it up.

If anyone else wants resources to find a doctor/compounding pharmacy in their area, personal recommendations for doctors in either Southern CA (no, it's not the Hall Center, my doctor is board certified in Internal Medicine, a BHRT specialist, and is terrific!) or Charlotte, NC, or wants a list of recommended reading (I prefer books by health care providers--not celebrities) just drop me an email at holyhormones@gmail.com. Happy hormonal health to all----we deserve it!

You can get some GREAt information from an MD / RN team (and no prescription bioidentical hormones) if you just go to youtube and enter in "where can I buy bioidentical hormones." Or Google the name of Clinical Nurse Specialist and author - "Corinne Peachment." You'll find the website along with testimonials and an award-winning TV News video. Good luck.

First of all, the strength of the bioidentical hormones purchased over the counter or over the Internet are not nearly at the same strength as ones prescribed by a doctor and purchased at a pharmacy/compounding pharmacy. They are in large part a waste of money, and of course, they are not covered under insurance. Let me put a myth to rest, *it is absolutely NOT TRUE that health insurance will never cover bioidentical hormones. *Most physicians who truly are experts in BHRT do not accept insurances in their practices, because the insurance companies flatly refuse to pay for hormone balancing (which is very short sighted, since a hormonally balanced patient is a healthier, thus less expensive patient), or the reiumbursement rates are so low that a physician would be forced to see multiple patients in an hour. One of the important components of true bioidentical hormone replacement therapy balance is the doctor doing more than just looking at a set of lab values----it takes time to take a complete history of a patient, an exam, and a frank discussion about the patient's symptoms, amount of time experiencing discomfort, family medical history, etc. Most of the doctors who are proficient in BHRT spend about an hour with a patient at the first visit---the insurance companies pay for about 10 minutes worth of time. My health insurance does pay for more than half the cost of my hormones (progesterone, testosterone, estriol cream for vaginal dryness, and my thyroid hormones) so my out of pocket expense for a month is about $40-45. That's way less than the $750 my insurance company and I were paying for the 7 medications I no longer take. Bioidentical hormones are safe, far safer than the synthetic Premarin/Prempro hormones still (despite all the evidence of increased cancer risk) being prescribed by too many doctors-----but hormones are powerful substances, and absolutely without a doubt should only be taken when needed, in appropriate, physiological doses, and under a doctor's supervision. Some of these websites promote no prescription and no testing needed------that's absolutely nuts and it's taking a great risk with your health. Many women in menopause (me included) are what is known as estrogen dominant----and you have no way of knowing for sure unless you get a hormone panel. You could significantly raise your cancer risk by adding additional estrogen to the already too much estrogen in your body (without proper balancing of progesterone)-----this is important, this is your health you are talking about

please take hormone balance for the serious health issue it is! You also need the expertise of a knowledgeable physician who can help you develop a comprehensive plan including the right supplements----I'm constantly amazed at the number of people who still are not taking Vitamin D3, have never had their levels tested, and their doctors have never talked to them about it. Supplements, too, have the power to help, but also the power to harm in the wrong doses (or interactions with medications).

Many women who are dealing with hormonal imbalances are not only dealing with the sex hormones (estrogens, progesterone and testosterone) but they are also dealing with thyroid hormone imbalances----another serious health concern and one not addressed on these websites. You need to have a doctor who is proficient in thyroid issues and will test both your T4 and T3 thyroid levels. I highly recommend Mary Shomon's books to learn more about the subject. I'm blessed to finally have a doctor who is passionate about thyroid imbalance issues (he is hypothyroid himself, so he knows how lousy it makes a patient feel when they are out of balance) ----this is the first time in my life my thyroid is balanced and I feel so much better it's amazing.

If anyone would like assistance in finding a doctor and/or compounding pharmacy in their area who can help them with bioidentical hormone balance, or anyone who would like a list of books to read to learn more about BHRT (I prefer to recommend books written by doctors and health care professionals rather than celebrities) please drop me an email at holyhormones@gmail.com and I will send the list to you via email. If you are looking for a doctor in the Southern CA area (no, not the Hall Center, my doctor is BOARD CERTIFIED in Internal Medicine, specializes in bioidentical hormones and thyroid imbalances and his practice fees are far more reasonable than most because he truly beleives that women of modest means should have access to bioidentical hormones---he's terrific and I travel cross country to be his patient) or in the Charlotte, NC area (this doctor wrote a BHRT book that I recommend highly) please also drop me an email and I will get t he information out to you as soon as possible. Best wishes to all for hormonal health!

I just typed "bioidentical hormones" into the seach field on google and I got a ton of information on different treaments and procedures that can be done to help with hormone imbalance. I saw that Oprah came up a lot and I figured I'd check out the site and I must say, I'm impressed. This a great resource for anyone who is on fence about trying bioidenticals. I found a few different links on here to different physicians that specialize in this kind of thing and I also found out that there are actually acadamies that train these doctors to practice what they're calling "alternative medicine." I'm really starting to watch what I'm eating and I've even conjoured up the energy to work-out five times a week. I've been reading that fitness and nutrition are a great way to keep your hormones balanced, especially as we start to get older and our hormones begin to decline. The trouble is, even with a good diet and plenty of exercise, I'm still not quite feeling myself. I feel run-down and tired. I'm really starting to think that it's hormonal. I've been reading about andropause, does anyone know anything about it? I know that it's the "male menopause" and all, but how do I know if I'm experiencing true andropause?

I don't know whether or not you found anyone yet, but I recently discovered a great bioidentical hormone specialist in the St. Paul/Minneapolis area. His name is Dr. Gregory Pippert (I'm pretty sure that's how it's spelled). I found him through a google search and his i saw he even had some videos on youtube, and he seemed to know what he was talking about and it made a lot of sense. My sister lives in Chicago and we found out that Dr. Pippert is actually a part of a national network of physicians who all specialize in biodientical hormone therapy, called Body logic MD. She just started with a doctor in Chicago, I don't know what his name is, but I've heard great things. You can search it on google and you'll get a whole bunch of locations and physicians. Their website is also very informative and has a lot of information on different health-realted topics.

Just thought I'd share the great find!

There are tons of Internet resources on andropause---I just type in the word and Body Logic's website lists 10 symptoms:

irritability, sleep issues, loss of libido, erection problems, muscle loss, weight gain, memory loss, thinning hair, decreased bone density, depression.

Many of the books on bioidentical hormone replacement therapy specifically have chapters on andropause, one of my favourites is The Youth Effect by Dr. Ron Brown. He practices here in Charlotte, NC and the book is well written and easy to read (well, as easy as any of these books are!)

If anyone wants a list of resources (books--I prefer ones written by healthcare professionals over celebrities) to learn more about BHRT, drop me an email at holyhormones@gmail.com. The resource list also gives you a bunch of ways to find a doctor and/or compounding pharmacist in your area to help you with hormonal balance. If you need a personal recommendation in the Southern CA area, I can provide that too (no, not the Hall Center, my doctor is board certified in Internal Medicine, is an expert on BHRT, and also is terrific with thyorid issues!)
