McCain Dominated Obama on Foreign Policy

Posted on Oct 1, 2008 12:24 AM

Something interesting happened during the debate while they were
talking about Iran. Sen. John McCain made Sen. Barack Obama look
foolish.

At about the 1:05 mark into the debate Obama made various attempts to
interrupt McCain. Navy Captain McCain got tired of this tactic
and basically steamed over
Obama and left Obama in McCain's wake, to use a nautical analogy.
At one point Obama was
sputtering like an old outboard motor.

The situation was similar to the old movie scene of the kid challenging
the champ to a fight. The champ uses an arm to hold off the
kid who flails his arms without hitting anything.

Obama challenged McCain by interrupting and McCain responded by
verbally dominating Obama. McCain talked over Obama so Obama
couldn't get a word in until McCain was ready to let him do so.

The spot isn't easy to find because McCain literally almost
drowns out Obama. The volume needs to be turned up to hear
Obama. I noticed it when I was watching the debate, but
didn't write down the time so I had to go back to find it on the copy
on my DVR. There may be another point in the debate where something
similar happened.

Obama claims he wants to negotiate with the leaders of other
countries. The incident with McCain indicates he shouldn't even
consider it.

Talking with other leaders isn't just a matter of
exchanging ideas. It can involve using the voice to
dominate. Obama's sputtering against McCain indicates he
isn't ready
to deal with leaders who are even better at verbal domination than John
McCain.

Obama seems incapable of understanding the basics of international
affairs. Serious negotiations are normally handled by people who
specialize in negotiating rather than by national leaders. Only
dictators attempt to "negotiate" with other leaders because dictators
believe they can dominate through the force of their personalities.
President John F. Kennedy acted like he was
weak when talking to Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev and we nearly had
a nuclear war over Soviet missiles in Cuba.

Leaders like Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad are often master
psychologists. They hold their positions because they know how to
manipulate people. Obama would have a better chance taking
on Michael Jordan one on one in basketball than challenging Ahmadinajad
one on one in negotiations.

Obama still doesn't understand that attacking another nation is an act
of war. If the United States were to openly send the military
into Pakistan or try to bomb Osama bin Laden like Obama wants to do
that would be an act of war against the sovereign state of Pakistan and
Pakistan would be justified in retaliating. The fact that bin
Laden is an international criminal is irrelevant.

Obama also seems incapable of understanding the volatility of the
situation in Pakistan. Violent groups are very
powerful in Pakistan and could use an open U.S. invasion to gain the
necessary support to take over the country and gain control of
Pakistan's nuclear weapons.

Obama may not understand that catching bin Laden would not do anything
to reduce the treat posed by al Qaeda.

Many Americans believe it was a mistake eight years ago to elect
a president who needed to have his vice president give him
foreign policy advice. Many of these same Americans now want to
repeat that mistake and elect Barack Obama who plans to take
foreign policy advice from his vice presidential running mate.

Neither Candidate Can Handle Economic Crisis

Posted on Sep 28, 2008 7:11 PM

The economic portion of the so called debate Friday night was a waste
of time. Neither candidate provided more than a vague set of conditions
for evaluating any proposal. They want us to put them in charge,
but have nothing to offer for dealing with the current
crisis.

But their lack of any solution shouldn't be surprising. If either had a
solution to the credit he would have been in Washington trying to get
Congress to
adopt his solution instead of debating in Mississippi. Hopefully,
President George W. Bush will solve the problem before they take office.

Sen. Barack Obama kept trying to bring up the issue of health
care which is
irrelevant to the credit crisis. In general Obama seems more
concerned with playing the blame game than ending the crisis.
The important thing now is to end the crisis.

Both candidates repeated the old religions of their parties.

Sen. John McCain says he is going to freeze federal
spending except for defense and entitlement programs. It'll never
happen. Republicans have been talking about that for decades
and haven't succeeded.

Most programs have too many supporters in Congress to be reduced.
Federal agencies often have regional offices, and the communities with
those offices will pressure their congressional
delegation to keep those offices open. The
communities or organizations that benefit will also lobby
for keeping the programs.

Sen; Obama claims he's going to raise revenue by closing corporate
loopholes. Democrats have been promising to do that for decades
and haven't succeeded yet. Congress creates new loopholes faster
than it eliminates old ones. Even if Congress did eliminate
loopholes no money could be raised by taxing companies that are already
losing money.

McCain has a better chance to freeze spending than Obama has to
eliminate corporate loopholes. The president can veto spending
bills. The president cannot force congress to close tax loopholes.

McCain is correct that Obama's spending program would
require a general tax increase rather than a reduction. If Obama
really believes that he can cut taxes and increase spending, those nice
young men in their clean white coats need to take him to the happy
home.

According to the Main Stream Media, Obama is supposed to be stronger on
economic issues. I saw no evidence of that Friday night.

Based on the comments the candidates made on the economic
situation during the debate we would be better off keeping
President George W. Bush for the next four years or bringing back Bill
Clinton. Many people have forgotten that Bush
brought us through the economic crisis that followed
the 9/11 attack.

McCain Wants to TCB, Obama Doesn't

Posted on Sep 25, 2008 1:49 PM

Senator John McCain is correct. He and Senator Barack Obama should
return to
Washington to do the jobs we are paying them to do instead of
participating in a political reality show called a debate. The
place for two United States Senators to debate during an economic
crisis is on the floor of the United States Senate. They can present
their views about what to do and attempt to gain support from their
fellow Senators.

Someone who cannot demonstrate leadership as a Senator will not be able
to do so as President.

They can participate in one of those debates anytime. At present their
responsibility is to take care of the business (TCB) they being paid to
take care of as United States Senators. If Obama didn't want to
continue being a Senator while he ran for president he should have done
the honorable thing and resigned like Bob Dole did when he ran for
president in 1996.

Obama doesn't want to TCB in the Senate. He prefers being a celebrity
who
goes around making speeches to adoring crowds because he likes to hear himself talk.

Would you promote someone who spends all his time talking about what he
would do if promoted instead of taking care of business in his current
job? Getting legislation through Congress is one of the president's most important jobs. Appearing on talk shows isn't.

Does Obama
want to merely talk about some vague change or does he
actually want to produce changes? Perhaps Obama doesn't want to
return to the Senate to do his job because he has done such a lousy job
as Senator.

If Obama wants to play the spoiled brat who has to have his way
about a debate, perhaps McCain's running mate Gov. Sarah
Palin can stand in for McCain while McCain TCB's in
the Senate.

The primary purpose of any bailout should be to help people keep their
homes to prevent mass foreclosures from further damaging the real
estate market. The more houses that are put on the market the
lower the value of other houses. A major decline in the value of
houses in general would reduce the assets of banks
that have more conservative mortgage programs. Such a reduction
could create problems for these banks.

Payment for the bailout should come as much as possible from those who
created the problem including both creditors and debtors, instead of
taxpayers in general.

The federal government should buy up bad mortgages at full current
value for
homes that haven't been foreclosed on. If the lender has
foreclosed on the property the federal government shouldn't pay
anything more than the current market value of the home. The
foreclosed
homes should be turned over to the Department of Housing and Urban
Development to be used in part tor a program to help military veterans,
school teachers, law enforcement officers and firefighters to purchase
homes.

Payment to companies should take the form of Treasure bills redeemable
under a schedule that would allow 10% to be redeemed in one year,
another 10% in two years, etc. Alternatively Congress might limit
redemption of the bonds to 5% per year. Companies could use these
T-bills
to compensate employees or pay future federal income taxes.
Companies accepting
federal aid should be required to pay an extra income tax on total
revenue over the next 20 years with only limited deductions allowed.
Congress should consider a surtax on high executives in firms
that are in trouble, possibly applying the tax to all income above some
threshold without allowing deductions. The IRS
should audit these firms each year.

Homeowners with bad mortgages where appropriate would
have to file for bankruptcy to get out of any credit card
debts. Congress would create a special exception to
bankruptcy law to allow them to file "emergency" bankruptcy.
Eliminately consumer debt would improve their ability to pay on
the mortgage.

Homeowners who would still have difficulty making mortgage payments
could be allowed to trade for one of the lower valued foreclosed houses
the federal government takes over.

The interest on the mortgage would be the same rate as on the T-bills
used for the bailout. Congress should consider requiring
these individuals to have mortgage payments deducted from their
paychecks along with the money withheld for income taxes. These
homeowners would be helping to pay for the bailout.

HUD would offer former residents of the foreclosed houses an
opportunity to regain these homes at the reduced value
under the same conditions as those in houses that haven' t been
foreclosed on yet. These individuals would also help pay for the
bailout.

The Great Depression lasted so long not because banks failed, but
because the bank failures eliminated the assets of depositors.
Bank foreclosures of houses and businesses, particularly farms, further
eliminated assets held by individuals that might have been used to turn
the economy around. The foreclosures didn't help the banks
because few could afford to buy the foreclosed properties.

The Best Health Insurance Program

Posted on Aug 31, 2008 2:55 PM

The nation's best insurance program will receive a lot of publicity this weekend. Jerry Lewis will conduct the annual Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon this weekend.

The Jerry Lewis Labor Day telethon has been a tradition since the first Labor Day telethon in New York City in 1966. Lewis and former comedy partner Dean Martin had previously conducted a telethon in New York City in 1955, but it wasn't on Labor Day. Jerry Lewis and all the other performers donate their services and receive no payment.

Most people don't think of MDA as being an insurance program because it doesn't charge fees from those who need its services. You don't have to have donated to MDA in the past to benefit from its treatment programs. Patients don't have to donate money to MDA to continue receiving treatment, but they or their families often help MDA raise money so that it can continue to assist them and others.

MDA not only provides treatment and other services, such as summer camp for children patients, but it also researches the nature of the over 40 neuromuscular diseases it covers and attempts to develop treatments that can cure those disorders or delay their progression.

"The only requirement for receiving an evaluation at an MDA clinic is the written recommendation of a physician in whose judgment a person may have one of the neuromuscular diseases covered by the Association’s medical services program." This requirement is reasonable because MDA doctors would have less time to treat MDA patients if they had to spend their time diagnosing unrelated disorders.

Similarly, paying only costs not covered by a patient's regular insurance allows MDA to help more people than it would be able to help otherwise. MDA can't raise its insurance rates to cover cost increases like traditional private or public insurance programs, so it needs to limit its costs to treatment that isn't already covered by other insurance programs

MDA is an example of the type of organization we need more of. Other examples are St. Jude's (supported by the late comedian Danny Thomas and his daughter Marlo) and the Shriners' hospitals. What they offer is pure insurance. People who can afford to help pool their resources so that whoever needs help can obtain it. The practice is a survival from the days when Americans helped each other without worrying about any immediate benefit for themselves. They helped because they knew that if they needed help others would help them.

MDA's research focuses on muscular dystrophy, but the treatments and knowledge that research produces can benefit people with other disorders. One of those treatments saved Jerry Lewis' life several years ago when he had a major heart problem. Recently, MDA researchers announced they have found a way to use a patient's skin cells as stem cells to treat ALS. Being able to use skin cells as stem cells will help treatment of many other unrelated disorders.

This year's telethon will be broadcast on local stations throughout the country as well as on cable and satellite on Chicago's WGN. Those who prefer the Internet can find the telethon on MDA's website. The website currently has highlights from last year's telethon available. A new fund raising activity this year is an online auction that will run through Sep. 4.

Michigan, Florida Should Sue Democrats

Posted on Jun 1, 2008 11:08 PM

The states of Michigan and Florida need to tell the Democratic Party to seat their delegates with full voting rights or face the prospect of not having a presidential candidate on the November ballot in those states. Alternatively, these states should seek a federal injunction preventing the Democrats from conducting a nominating convention unless it gives equal rights to the residents of Michigan and Florida. Allowing a small group of Democrats to deny voters in their states the equal right to participate in the presidential candidate selection process would be a violation of the oath state officials take to defend the Constitution.

The Democrats order that Barack Obama be given Michigan delegates demonstrates the Democrats have complete contempt for the electoral process because Obama's name wasn't even on the ballot. Michigan at the very least should sue the Democratic Party to force it to assign delegates based on the will of the voters rather than the will of authoritarian party leaders.

In Nazi Germany and the old Soviet Union a political party offiicial could be more powerful than government officials. In communist states the head of the communist party has often been the most powerful person in the country because he determines who holds the government offices. In the United States, government officials elected by the people are supposed to be more powerful than political party officers.

At one time in the U.S. political party leaders chose political candidates in secret to insure the candidates would serve whatever special interests controlled the party. State governments created the political primary system to eliminate this form of corruption and insure popular control over the candidate selection process.

In a true democracy. anyone should be able to run for office who meets the legal qualifications. However the existence of two major parties makes it difficult for anyone to win an election without the endorsement of one of the two parties. Primary elections are a means of preventing private groups from taking over the election process and limiting who can run for office.

The Democatic Party is attempting to circumvent the popular selection of candidates by claiming it can tell states when they can hold presidential primaries. Allowing political parties to order state governments to follow party orders rather than the will of the people in the respective states is a direct assault on the idea of government by the people and a movement to the type of political system of Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union.
Both major parties have small groups within them whose members believe their party should adopt a strict ideological approach to issues as is common with political parties in totalitarian states. If Congress is not going to act to insure that the presidential nominating process is open to all, the states must act. Congress is the only body that has the constitutional authority to control when state governments can set presidential primaries. If party leaders believe limits on when primaries can be held are needed, they should ask Congress to impose such limits. The political parties should not attempt to dictate to the states like the Nazi Party and the Communist Party did.

In Defense of Rev. Wright

Posted on May 2, 2008 3:00 PM

I disagree with Rev. Jeremiah Wright on many things, but as an American I believe that he has the right to believe whatever he wants to believe and express those beliefs.
My father believed the rights of freedom of belief and freedom of expression were important enough to risk his life in Europe in World War II. I believe those rights were important enough to risk my life in Vietnam.
I disagree with Rev. Wright that the U.S. government is responsible for the HIV virus, but as an historian I know that some of our ancestors gave small pox infected blankets to the Indians.
America has a long tradition of belief in conspiracies. Many believe there was some type of government involvement in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and the fall of the World Trade Towers. I disagree with those theories but see nothing wrong with people wanting to have such beliefs.
Wright's statements about 9/11 being punishment are consistent with a long religious tradition dating from biblical times. Religious leaders have often explained calamities as punishment for sins. I disagreed with Rev. Martin Luther King's statements about the Vietnam War, but I recognized that he had a duty to speak out against what he believed to be wrong.
One of the functions of religious leaders is to condemn what they believe people or nations are doing wrong. If we want to truly guarantee religious freedom, we must allow them to continue to do so even if we disagree with them.
If anyone is to blame in the controversy, it is Senator Barack Obama not Rev. Jeremiah Wright. No one held a gun to Obama's head and forced him to attend Rev. Wright's church for 20 years. If Obama had serious disagreements with Rev. Wright, Obama should have left the church instead of belatedly condemning Rev. Wright for holding various beliefs.
Obama's behaviior is scary in someone who wants to be president. Presidents can become intoxicated with the powers of the presidency. A candidate who makes a practice of condemning those he disagrees with as a candidate might attempt to punish those who disagree with him if he's elected.
Rev. Wright's statements about HIV might not make sense to most of us, but many of those who are condemning him believe ideas that make even less sense.
For example, many of them believe that carbon dioxide which is less than 0.04% of the atmosphere has some type of magical power to control the temperature of the atmosphere. They believe this even though the process they talk about is inconsistent with the laws of physics and with scientific experiments. They claim the earth is getting significantly warmer, even though they admit that the average temperature they use changed by only 1F during the entire 20th Century and such change represents only a 0.17% increase in temperature. Such a small change could indicate nothing more than differences in equipment or differences in the characteristics of the sites containing the equipment.

Ivan Dixon, R.I.P.

Posted on Mar 19, 2008 8:06 PM

Ivan Dixon is probably best known for playing the character a James Knichloe on the 60's tv series "Hogan's Heroes' which was one of the first series to have a black actor as a major regular character. However, his efforts to integrate television began before "Hogan's Heroes". His first tv role was in a 1957 episode of "Armstrong Circle Theater". He appeared in numerous other tv shows prior to "Hogan's Heroes" including the pilot episodes of "I Spy" and "Man From U.N.C.L.E.".

Dixon's role on "Hogan's Heroes" was significant in part because it would have been unlikely that a black soldier would have been given the assignment of participating in a spy operation stationed at a German POW compound. During WWII black soldiers were seldom given anything more than assignments in mess halls or graves registration. Exceptions included the Tuskegee Airmen and the truck drivers assigned to the Red Ball Express. It would have been unlikely that a black sergeant would have been the top sergeant in an otherwise white unit.

The color of the character Sgt. Kinchloe was rarely even mentioned in the show. In contrast to black actors in movies from an earlier era, Kinchloe was a serious character. The dumb comic type roles such as Sgt. Schultz and Sgt. Carter were assigned to white actors.

Dixon later became a director. His credits include 7 episodes of "The Walton's", 9 episodes of "The Rockford Files" and 13 episodes of "Magnum, P.I."

His honors included four NAACP Image Awards, the National Black Theatre Award and the Paul Robeson Pioneer Award from the Black American Cinema Society.

Dixon had been suffering from complications due to kidney failure and died of a hemorrhage Sunday at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, N.C. according to his daughter Doris Nomathande Dixon.

Born in 1931 in New York, Dixon graduated in 1954 from North Carolina Central University in Durham.

In addition to his daughter, survivors include his wife of 53 years, Berlie Dixon of Charlotte, and a son, Alan Kimara Dixon of Oakland. At Dixon's request, no memorial or funeral is planned, the family said.

Michael Bloomberg Doesn't Get It

Posted on Mar 9, 2008 8:38 PM

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg doesn't understand the problem with the two major parties. After announcing he wouldn't seek the presidency as a third party candidate, he suggested he would support a major party candidate who leveled with the American people about the issues facing the country. Unfortunately, major party candidates are prisoners of their own parties.

Those running on a major party ticket need the support of party activists who often have an unrealistic oversimplified view of issues. These activists want candidates who will at least give lip service to their views. Many of these activists are what longshoreman Eric Hofer once described as "True Believers" who believe they are right and anyone who disagrees is wrong.

Democrats, for example, want a candidate who will end U.S. involvement in Iraq regardless of the consequences. They don't care what happens afterwards because they cannot comprehend any negative consequences such as al Qaeda taking control of Iraq or the substantial number of American casualties that might result from a precipitous retreat from a combat zone.

Many Republicans want all illegal immigrants removed from the country regardless of the economic consequences. They would prefer to endure a severe recession or depression than have to share the country with "illegals". The anti-immigrant group doesn't understand that we have a shortage of younger workers and will need even more workers as the baby boomer generation retires.

Bloomberg has no national constituency that he could encourage to support either major party candidate so his offer of support to one of them is meaningless. Bloomberg can change the situation only if he runs for president himself. As a third party candidate he would be free to take any position on the issues he felt was appropriate.

Only by running for president could Bloomberg demonstrate that Americans want a candidate who levels with them. Of course maybe Bloomberg is wrong. Maybe Americans prefer a president who lies to them. Maybe they want a president who tells them what they want to hear instead of what they need to know.

Greenhouse Gas Equations Wrong

Posted on Mar 8, 2008 7:17 PM

Hungarian scientist Ferenc Miskolczi has discovered the greenhouse gas equation Arthur Milne developed in 1922 contains a serious flaw. Milne mistakenly solved the differential equation involved by assuming an infinitely thick atmosphere. Miskolczi was working for NASA at the time and NASA suppressed his report which contradicted NASA's claims.

Miskolczi resigned in protest, stating in his resignation letter, "Unfortunately my working relationship with my NASA supervisors eroded to a level that I am not able to tolerate. My idea of the freedom of science cannot coexist with the recent NASA practice of handling new climate change related scientific results."

Miskolczi rewrote the equations and the modified equations don't indicate a runaway greenhouse effect. His equations indicate a limit to any greenhouse effect. Thus even if there is a greenhouse effect it cannot do what the Rev. Al Gore of the Church of Global Warming claims it will do.

Research by Stephen Schwartz also challenges claims of a runaway greenhouse effect.

I haven't studied differential equations for a few decades, but I do remember that guessing at values for variables is sometimes used to solve differential equations because of their complexity. However, there are two values that should never be used, infinity and zero. These two numbers have special mathematical properties that make them unsuitable for this purpose. For example, you may remember learning that division by zero is impossible. However, there is one special case in which division by zero is possible, zero divided by zero. The test to determine if division is correct is multiplication. Zero multiplied by any other number is zero so zero divided by zero can be any number.

In the real world it might be possible to a zero amount of any commodity, but not an infinite amount. An infinitely thick atmosphere would also be infinitely massive, i.e. a super black hole. In an infinitely thick atmosphere it wouldn't make any difference what the gases were because the gravitational attraction would be so high that radiation could not escape.

In fairness to Milne, his research dealt with stellar atmospheres rather than planetary atmospheres. Milne unsuccessfully attempted to develop a competing theory to Einstein's Theory of Relativity.

Fasciam Is Not on the Right

Posted on Mar 4, 2008 6:28 PM

he idea that fascism is "on the right" is a common myth spread by those who haven't taken the time to study it. Adolf Hitler was an avowed socialist who headed the National Socialist Workers Party. He did not establish his administration to benefit business. He merely recognized that he needed German industrialists to produce his war machine and thus allowed them to keep their businesses so long as they weren't Jewish and didn't question him.

He co-opted non-Jewish business owners by telling them if they didn't support him the communists would take over instead. He treated Jewish business owners the same way the communists treated all business owners. he convinced ordinary Germans that Jewish business owners including small business owners as well as bankers were the cause of German economic problems.

The non-Jewish business owners who supported Hitler lost their political rights just like other Germans.

Democrats like to call Republicans "fascists" but if fascism is likely to come to America it is more likely to be brought in by the Democrats than the Republicans. Democrats are more prone to the charismatic leaders who could provide a fascist leader.

The myth of fascism is that it is the opposite of communism. The fact is that fascism is just a less extreme version of totalitarianism than is communism.

Reporters As Prostitutes

Posted on Feb 23, 2008 3:25 PM

Reporting on the issue of "global warming" demonstrates that often the only difference between reporters and prostitutes is that prostitutes understand what type business they are in. Many reporters are allowing themselves to be used by politicians and others to con the viewers and readers the reporters are supposed to be serving.
30 years ago as a graduate student I took some journalism courses. At that time reporters were encouraged to get more than one opinion on issues and to avoid taking sides by reporting allegations as facts. A phrase like "according to" some source should precede or follow whatever claim the source is making.
Many reporters willingly repeat the allegation that "greenhouse gases are causing global warming" as if it were an accepted fact instead of a subject of controversy. News stories will state that "CO2 causes global warming" without presenting any evidence to support the allegation. Those who support this hypothesis cannot provide evidence because the process doesn't exist.
The situation is occurring in spite of the fact that it is easier for reporters to find alternate opinions than it was 30 years ago. In the 70's reporters had to contact other news sources and ask for other opinions. Today reporters can use internet search engines to find quotes from other sources, including experts who aren't well known, with just a few mouse clicks.
Good reporters should be skeptical of their sources and recognize that people who willingly talk to reporters are usually attempting to gain acceptance for their points of view. Such sources may get away with misrepresenting the facts when reporters don't bother to check the validity of statements. Reporters who don't understand the issues they are reporting on are particularly vulnerable.
Why should reporters who don't understand science be skeptical of the claims about "greenhouse gases causing global warming"?
First, those making the claim admit that average temperatures only increased by 1 F (0.5C) during the entire 20th Century. Average temperatures can vary by more than that from one day to the next or from a shady area to a sunny area only a few feet apart.
In an era when even priests and preachers can be crooks, there is no reason to assume scientists will tell the truth.
Those scientists who believe in global warming sometimes claim that those who disagree are being paid to do so by oil companies, etc. If these scientists don't believe scientists as a group can be trusted to tell the truth why should reporters? Have reporters checked to see how many of those scientists who support global warming claims are being paid to do so.
The scientist as con artist is an old movie plot that is based on fact. There have been recent cases of scientists being caught presenting false data to support their claims in addition to those who claim they can provide miracle cures for diseases.
The claim that a minor atmospheric gas (0.036% of the atmosphere) can determine air temperatures sounds too much like magic to be taken at face value.
Statements by global warming claimants about punishing those who disagree with them should raise a red flag with any real journalist who supports freedom of speech. Such statements made by individuals in authority positions can indicate fear that someone will find out they are wrong. Scientists who believe they are correct welcome challenges.
If the idea of "global warming" is valid why do those who support it feel they have to exaggerate everything. Many of their claims sound too much like the traditional Hollywood disaster movie plot to be believable, particularly the claims of the great exaggerator, Al Gore.
Journalists have criticized the U.S. military for "planting" stories about the Iraq conflict. NASA's Gavin Schmidt has been running an ostensibly private website supporting NASA's claims about global warming for some time. If the claim about global warming is valid, why does the government need to set up a propaganda site to plant information supporting the claim?
S.. Fred Singer who was the first director of the National Weather Satellite Service has questioned claims about global warming for years. John Coleman who founded the Weather Channel recently called the global warming claim the greatest scam in history, but reporters ignore him because they have already made up their minds and aren't interested in facts. How many of those who call themselves journalists have bothered to check with these well known experts?
Real journalists report both sides of controversial issues. Propagandists only present one side.
Perhaps it is unfair to compare reporters to prostitutes. Prostitutes are professionals who are paid by those who utilize their services. Reporters who present only one side of an issue don't get paid by those who use them.

Missing in America Project

Posted on Feb 20, 2008 7:08 PM

Two navy veterans have discovered that the cremated remains of thousands of veterans are sitting unclaimed on shelves in hospitals and mortuaries. They have established a project to identify these veterans and provide a proper burial. Some of those identified thus far served as long ago as World War I.

The organization plans to:

The initial focus of the MIA Project will be a massive, nation-wide effort to locate, identify and inter the unclaimed remains of forgotten veterans. This task will be executed through the combined, cooperative efforts of members of the American Legion, other volunteer service and veteran organizations, local Funeral Homes, State Funeral Commissions, State and National Veterans Administration Agencies, and the State and National Veterans Cemetery Administrations. Local, state and national laws must be followed in the identification, claiming process and proper interment of the unclaimed remains of forgotten veterans.

This will be a lengthy project and will require many man-hours to ensure that we have done our utmost to discover every forgotten veteran and procure each a dignified resting place. This will also be a labor of love, a task of redemption, for a debt of service that can never be repaid.

The second phase of the MIA Project will be the creation of a network of individuals working with local Funeral Homes, State, and National Agencies to ensure that, from now on, the cremated remains of any unclaimed veteran will be identified, claimed and interred in a timely manner. This will be an ongoing project and will most likely be a cooperative effort between many voluntary service organizations.

The MIA Project will be a long-term project, but not a time sensitive project."

Ignorance of the Presidency

Posted on Feb 18, 2008 1:21 PM

Many Americans seem ignorant about what the job of President of the United States involves. The debate over who to nominate largely ignores the fact that the President is the nation's Chief Executive Officer.

Democrats are preoccupied with the color or sex of their candidates. Many Republicans are preoccupied with which candidate is "conservative" enough.

Too little attention has been paid to who has the most relevant experience to be an executive. Democrats had the candidate with the best resume, Gov. Bill Richardson, but they have rejected him in favor of media stars Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton who have never run any large organization. We can evaluate Richardson on the basis of how he ran the Department or Energy or how effective he has been as a governor.

Republicans at least considered experienced executives, even if they devoted more attention to their ideological views. We can evaluate John McCain on how he ran the Navy fighter wing he was in charge of. Governors Mitt Rommey and Mike Huckabee could be evaluated on how they handled their governorships.

Ignorant voters blindly assume that a candidate who agrees with them will be able to implement policies they support. The reality is that even the most well meaning candidate cannot automatically gain support for his or her proposals. Gaining approval for an agenda requires experience.

Obama and Robinson

Like many young males growing up in the 50's, I admired baseball players. In the 50's baseball was the primary sport. The NFL, NBA and NASCAR had not yet become as popular as they would be later.

I liked to read the biographies of baseball players. After reading about the old time players like Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb, I began reading the biographies of contemporary players like Mickey Mantle and Jackie Robinson. Robinson became one of my personal heroes because of what he went through to succeed.

I was the only member of my 8th grade class to be allowed to write a biography of a baseball player because Jackie Robinson was more than just a baseball player.
Robinson integrated the white baseball leagues. Branch Rickey of the Brooklyn Dodgers chose Robinson because he was willing an able to handle the opposition he would receive and becaue Robinson was an outstanding baseball player. He had demonstrated he could play the game in what were called the "Negro Leagues".

Rickey had Robinson start in the minor leagues so he could get used to the level of competition in the white leagues before moving him up to the Dodgers. Rickey knew that if Robinson failed to demonstrate he could play as well or better than most white players, white people might conclude that black players weren't as good as white players. Rickey also knew that if Robinson could help his team win most white fans would forget about his color.

Barack Obama wants to be the first President with obvious African ancestry. However, he has not yet demonstrated that he can "play the game" by holding a high executive position. He would enter the White House without the experience in the "minor leagues" (such as governor or cabinet secretary) that would prepare him for the position. If he were to fail because of that lack of experience, many white Americans would blame his color rather than his lack of experience. If that happened it could set back racial relations in the U.S. by decades.

The first black president needs to be someone who has demonstrated he can "play the game" rather than just someone who can "talk a good game."
