Dr. Oz and Montel Williams: After the Diagnosis

Posted on Mar 17, 2009 9:54 AM

Hi all,

I really enjoyed producing this show and hope you all watch today.

It was a real learning experience for me. I had heard of M.S. all my life, but had never really understood it until I heard Montel's story. It gave me a real appreciation for how people can manage pain and depression and carry on the relationships in their lives.

My supervising producer Jill had the idea of asking celebrities to talk about the moment of their devastating diagnosis. I am very proud of how those came together. Magic, Fran and Scott were amazing.

Please let me know what you thought of the show. I'm brainstorming ideas with the team for our next show. Please send us your ideas on too!

Have a great day!

Terry

How about a show to educate people with regard to clinical trials. I always feel that people need more education on this topic. When people get 'really sick', they are often given the chance to participate in a new drug trial. Being presented with a consent form (to consent for a new medication/a new medical device/or a new way to be treated with an old med) can be very intimidating. In addition, there are always trials ongoing for healthy individuals, or for those with a new diagnosis. Education is key, who better to tell this story then Dr. Oz and Oprah.

This show could help to remove some of the 'stigma' that surrounds the ideas related to clinical trials. Without this very valuable research, all of our lives would be different.

Terry,

This show left a big impact on me as someone who is battling metastatic cancer. I cried along w/ Montel. I so appreciate how open & honest he was in sharing his personal experience w/ MS. Dr. Oz's explanation of what MS is was sooo easy to understand & explain to others. Shows like this go along way to educating everyone about chronic diseases. I think it helps people be more sensitive to those who are chronically ill. Even though the person may "look" or "act" fine, they suffer in pain & struggle daily. I know first hand that the depression part is very real & often more debilitating than the disease itself.
Great job on this show . It's good to know how much fun you have working on them.

Your Montel show was great however, there were some things missing that left many newly diagnosed and friends/loved ones of those with MS more scared than necessary... There are also more medications used for MS than mentioned by Montel there are not just injectables but i.v. meds such as Tysabri and then also chemotherapy is used for MS also. There are many things in the works and G_d willing a cure maybe. I think it would have been good to have someone do some research on this part so it could be added outside of Montel bits... I'd love to see a show on the hopes in medications to treat incurable illnesses along with more people with the illnesses to give people a wider scope of what those illnesses can mean good and bad - and yes there is a good side. Many of us with MS feel that having this has made us better people than we would have been otherwise. We see things more clearly, appreciate life so much more etc... Anyhow just wanted to point out that not all was on the nose re: MS and it did leave a lot of people very scared - more than they need be. (I am so glad the show happed though because now people are noticing it and I believe it will help many people!!)

wonderful perspectives....great messages from montel and how we are not defined by our circumstance. I am surviving pulmonary Fibrosis. i really hope you consider a talk on this illness. mortality ratios are 200k diagnosed and 40k in deaths annually as high up there as breast cancer...when's the last time we all took a Pulmonary Function test? Lung disease is the nations #1killer and this test gives crucial answers. Our most vital organs? might be the next best Health show to produce! Thanks! MNLannon from San Diego

Terry, fabulous show. Touching, informative, sad, encouraging. I have emailed the show in the past asking that you do a show on Type 1, and just stumbled upon your blog, and want to recommend it to you. My 13 year old son was just diagnosed and it is a life-altering event. So much information we need to get out there, so many people ill-informed about this disease, I've been researching it every single day since that diagnosis day back in August. Please consider it.
Thank you. KATHY

Hi Terry,
I was excited to hear that Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) was covered on Oprah's anti-aging show last week. I would love to see a show dedicated to children who have brain injury and how alternative treatments (HBOT being one of them) can help.
My 19-month-old son has cerebral palsy, cortical vision impairment, and microcephaly as a result of a difficult birth. We are currently doing a second set of HBOT for him and we've seen some incredible results. His vision and attention span have improved and he's more with us than he was before. I'll be the first to tell you that HBOT isn't a miracle cure - but, it certainly can help and it would be great if the Oprah show could get the word out that there is hope for our injured children.
I feel those who've been brain-injured are often ignored in our society. We weren't given much hope for our son's future. I think it'd be great to see parents doing everything they can for their special needs kids. There are therapies that help, but doctors often won't tell (or don't know) about them.
I know that HBOT has made a difference in our son's life. At nineteen months he is walking all over the place and is a true blessing. He has obstacles he still needs to overcome. But, looking at him today, you'd never guess he has severe brain damage, or that at seven days old we were told no one would judge us if we just let him die. We attribute his development to answered prayers and HBOT. I'm not the type who would want to be on TV, but I'd be willing to appear to tell more parents about the effectiveness of HBOT and to encourage others to do everything they can to help their children.
Thanks for reading
Sincerely,
Lisa

Doing a show on the documentary film UNDEROURSKIN would be the best way to follow up the story of Montel and Fox. There are over 1,300 comments asking Oz and Oprah to do this. . . you could have Andy the filmmaker on, people in the film, and some Lyme Literate Medical Doctors.

Great show! I have followed Montel's story with interest as I, too, have multiple sclerosis and have always found it inspiring to see him continue forward with his life in spite of it.

After I picked myself up from my own diagnosis at 29, I was determined to be proactive about my health and my future. All of my research kept pointing to good nutrition as being the foundation to robust health. Great, I thought, only I don't know how to cook, I'm not sure what makes a healthy diet, and I have MS so I don't have a lot of energy to spend in the kitchen. That's when I became an accidental inventor of a unique, patented cooking method. Solving my problems in the kitchen also helped the course of my disease: I have not had an MS exacerbation since 2001!

Thanks for keeping us up with Montel -- his on-air presence has been missed.

Terry,
A million thanks for having Montel on the show. I watched it twice and cannot bring myself to erase it from my DVR.

I was diagnosed with MS four years ago and while I feel as though it was a gift, some days are pretty rough. My diagnosis and the challenges that come with it have made me a GODDESS!! I am not afraid to say it. I ROCK!

The majority of the people in my life seem still confused as to what MS is, and how it affects us. We look healthy on the outside and so most are not informed or too afraid to ask what is going on inside.

I could go on for days, but I will simply say-thank you thank you thank you. You have no idea how awesome I felt after the show.It can be lonely sometimes and it helps to know you brought it out in the open.

YAY!!

Hi Terry,
I really enjoy your blog and watch the Oprah show everyday. Would you ever consider doing a feature on a story line that is on the soap opera Guiding Light between the characters of Olivia and Natalia (a.k.a. Otalia)? It is a slow burning love story about two women who fell in love with each other that never expected to. I think this story line would fit in well on a piece about same-sex couple love stories becoming more prevalent on television. It is the best love story that is on television right now and has a huge fan base that can also be found online. This story line has touched so many people across the world and has been handled beautifully by the writers. I think it would be facinating for your viewers to be introduced to this storyline and the performances that are given by Crystal Chappell (plays Olivia) on Guiding Light everyday. Keep up the great work in the world of OW!

I saw your latest Hair Transplant topic with Dr. Oz the other day, and he is not up to speed on the latest in Hair Transplant Technology.

Dr.'s offer the strip method, because it is the easiest procedure for them to perform. However it is the most traumatic to the patients head.

There is an Automated Hair Transplant Machine out there which will not leave a linear scar on the back of the head.

Will you please have my sister on the show. She and her family were in the worst fatal accident on GA 85's history. They were coming home from a beautiful family trip from Utah. They had hired an airport shuttle. They were only about 15 minutes from home when a speeding wreckless driver hit them going 112 mph. The excursion they were in went into the air and began to flip. Everyone was ejected but my sister and my nieces fiance. My 21 year old niece Whitney was killed at the scene, the limo driver also died at the scene, my 13 month old great nephew Kayden (my niece Whitney's son) died about an hour later at the hospital. My 14 year old nephew Alexander died at 11:47 pm and my brother in law Demetrius was given 8 hours to live. He suffered a traumatic brain injury and was in a coma. My sister is continuing to suffer the loss of her only daughter, he young son and only grand child. At the same time, she basically lost the husband she once knew. He is recovering, thank god, but he cannot walk without help. He suffered a small stroke on his left side, due to the trauma of the accident, so he is having to recover from that as well............ my sister needs intervention. I worry about her. She has not had time to really truly grieve, as she is the full time care giver for her husband.... Please Please Please tell thier story.......Please. google falleen randle or demetrius randle or even google my name, sulianna chandler....to get the whole story.....Thank you and god bless. Sulianna Chandler

Hi, my name is Kim & I didn't really want to post something on the wall but I'm not sure how I can contact Terry. I'm actually needed to make contact with Montel himself regarding a family matter that is very personal. Because I live in New Zealand it has been very hard to make contact. Can anyone help me please? It is VERY important. Much thanks, Kim.

Terry, I would love a show focused around HEAVEN. So many people think of heaven as a different thing and/or place and I am not just talking about near death experiences where they are at the pearly gates. I am not sure if you want to go from the Biblical perspective but I think it is a topic people would love to hear more about and also a topic people may shy from as well which would make the show unique.

I can only offer my prayers and daily thoughts for you and your family. Your tragedy is so huge, it's hard to even contemplate. Please know that, because of your comment, millions will send you love, light and healing prayer every day. Grief, sorrow and loss are part of human existance, but your family has suffered beyond imagination. God bless all of you.
