It's Facebook Friday!

Posted on Mar 11, 2009 6:20 PM

Our team is producing the Live Friday show this week.

We love working on these shows because you never know what the big stories might be.

This week, we're unveiling the new "Oprah Winfrey Show" Facebook page!

Thanks for "friending" us!

I have to admit, I didn't know a lot about Facebook until I started working on this show. I created my very first profile and heard from people I haven't talked to in years. I'm still learning the lingo and I haven't had the courage to send out a status update. But I do love getting them from my friends.

One of my friends is making cookies.

Another is planning their St. Patrick's Day.

And another just had triplets!

There is great comfort in knowing what everyone is up to all at the same time!

Also, I know you have seen the YouTube video, "Christian the Lion". That moment when the giant lion leaps up to hug his former owners makes us all cry!

So many people wondered what the real story is behind that video..well, we've got it!

Make sure to tune in Friday, when our friends Ali, Mark and Gayle are live on the show!

My friend's two little boys were kidnapped on Sunday night. Please visit the facebook page for pictures and help bring them home. The page is called bringing jack and duncan home safe. Please contact the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children with any information.

The live shows are good. I love how the cameras give that "behind the scenes" effect! You all do a great job. Plus Ali is funny. I'm on facebook all night---and now this 19 year old male (haha) will be on facebook until 5am instead of 3am: Beacause Oprah has a facebook.

I love facebooking...as a Realtor, we use it to promote our properties. A wonderful thing about facebook is that it is international. www is worldwide web. There is off shore money coming into the real estate market and Ron and I have international certification, so we look for international buyers and referrals from agents on facebook as well.
It is also a fun way to stay in touch with friends and family...
Ron and Debbie

I fanned you guys and I'm now visiting with producers who are blogging! This is cool bonding moment I wonder what million things I should be doing that I'm ignoring LOL! Ahh ok curious about the lion story! Staying tuned --- Erika

Great show today (Friday)
You guys are the hardest working people...the hours are insane BUT you do such an excellent job! very rewarding!

THANK YOU FOR BLOGGING!!!!!

I love OGAM (Oprah, Gayle, Ali & Mark) Fridays. You guys are a good combination. Good job today...I of course cried again when I saw the Christian the Lion video.

Fantastic that you're on Facebook with the rest of the world. I just can't believe it took you so long to join. Ya, I know you're really busy with everything else that you do. Love your show, been a fan for years. Keep up the great work.

I just joined facebook about a month ago and am still learning what's all on here. I am excited that the show has an official page on fb now. I have never been able to go to a show in all the years I've watched since the mid-80's as a teen (I'll be 36 on March 21st)so this is the next best thing! I love visiting Chicago but only get to go for a weekend once a year. Hope all of you working on the show, website, and now facebook are enjoying your work to the fullest! Have a great day in the windy city!

oprah is a daily inspiration to millions of people.
This is how to pass on hope, kindness and compassion to all brothers and sisters. We are all family black, yellow, white, red a perfect rainbow of loving energy. Elke

Today's show was so cool, it made a big leap from being a fan to feeling like a true friend to all of you . It's cool.

Hi producerjk's

I have a idea for a show. I know America who love to see Oprah visit the White House and take a tour with Michelle Obama. It could tie in with the This month's O magazine with the First Lady.

Thanks

I join FB a month or so ago and now a fan, my purpose was to restart my work as an arist and sought to reconnect with old and I hope new clinets. At this point I have a seperate page for personal friends & family. With the newest update in the last coup0le of days has me a little thrown, but I'll adjust (taking Dr. Oz's advice to exercise the brain).

Of course I put a friend's request in...

I really like that the "young'un's " face behind FB is so unpretentious. How refreshing! And I so look forward to Friday's with the troops ! Way to Glow Oprah!

Hey there just looking for some tips on how to throw my 50th Birthday Party. I lost my job so it has to be cheap. Classy and Elegant would be nice, but considering my situation, I know it will be hard. So if there is anyone who can throw me out some helpful tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Birthday April 12.

Glad that there is now an Oprah facebook. I am the Facebook Queen. I have found old friends that I went to elementary school with after 35 yrs. later. We then saw each other in December. I am also planning our 30 yr. high school reunion on facebook which will take place in 2010. It is a fun/east way to organize any event. Thanks, Jackie Carrera Johnson aka: facebook Queen :O)

Great show! I have used Facebook to reconnect to some of my elementary school teachers and guys I went to the Naval Academy with 30 years ago! I started a thread on the elementary school site to hear from past students of my mom who taught second grade there and passed away last Oct from Ovarian cancer. I am only sorry mom never got to read the difference she made in so many lives when she was alive. She really loved teaching and was proud that teachers put so many children on the right path in life. Those kids who are adults now posted stories that have made the grief of losing mom a little less. Facebook really has the potential to make the world a better place (sort of like your show has :)

hey oprah, hi there. i just love your show and actually plan most of my day to be home by 4 to watch, been doing this ever since you came on i actually write part and have oprah mentioned in my "story" and a few short stories. as you were always part of our days. I belong to a small church forming, and we all watch you with skype when you had your series with Eckhart Tolle, we followed it week to week as that is the motto of our church and we actually try to live our lives that way. Anyway, thanks for all you do for the world everyday. Enjoyed see "Christian the Lion" update with the guys and congrats on your new puppy.
Blessings and Peace to you always.

I want to start a book club and I don't know how to start one.
I think it would be so interesting.
At the moment I'm reading a book called (The Source)it's really good and we can do some of the ideas from the book make it real.
Thank you.

I enjoy Oprah Friday it is casual and a great way to enjoy tea with friends and watch your show.

Jenna,

Mark said he created a Facebook page the night before Friday Live Aired. Ali and Gayle said they were going to create one.

Can you all post links to their profiles? I found Mark, but not sure if it's him or a fake.

Thanks,
David

This was the first time I'd seen "Christian the Lion!" The tears just poured down. Then I had to have my daughter watch it... "are you crying," she asks? Yep, I was. I watched that video about ten times that night. I guess when we feel so much LOVE it brings us to tears. Thanks for sharing about "Christian" for those of us who had yet to experience such a beautiful moment.

For almost a year, my neighbor tried to get me to join facebook. At first, I was apprehensive because of cybernet identity theft that can occur. However after a few of my Oprah Bootcamp Buddies joined and invited, I decided to give it a try. I am amazed at how much I am enjoying the site!! I have met people from all over the globe via facebook and I am amazed at how quickly people are drawn to my page. Friendships have developed and I even discovered a fantastic personal trainer on there!! The networking system is fabulous!! It is a great tool to shop your business, social networks and reconnect with people you haven't seen in ages!!
For me, it has been a great interactive tool to meet people I would never have had the economic means to visit (met a fabulous individual from Denmark and I reconnected with my long lost Oprah Bootcamp Buddy: Karine Sar). We have developed a marvelous friendship and I recommend this site to everyone! It is Fab-O-Lous!!

Hi. Today is World Down Syndrome Awareness Day. How about a mention on live Friday? Especialy in light of Prs. Obama's comment on Jay Leno last night. Obama has been a champion for people with disabilities, but right now he has the Down syndrome community very angry! Oprah has done so much to shed light on groups of people in this country who face discrimination. I think this would be a worthy topic for discussion.

hi there i am egyptian living in egypt ang i watch the show ,you guys do excellent work really ,i am a tv presenter and i am veiled and every show for me is like attending a lecture >
i like facebooking ,it's like having all the world at your backyard, any way you should be doing something about egypt and the egyptian women watching the show here because i am thinking of making a group for " egyptian oprah fans" have a good day

I have conflicting feelings about facebook (FB). I have lived in 7 different states so it has been wonderful in the sense that I have managed to locate (and vice versa) folks with whom I had lost touch.

Currently, I have no relatives living near me so that can be hard. FB has made it nice to stay connected to people.

On the other hand, I get invitations from guys that I don't know. When I check out their profile I see that they are registered with FB because they are interested in "women." I don't know how they locate "women" in this random way. I simply decline the "friend" invite.

The Friday show is HORRIFIC! It is such an awful production. Oprah needs to loose Gail. She's boring. She's tired. Mark is just there. He offers absolutely nothing other than being Kelly's husband. the other blod is just a ditz! She's also things I can't say. She is too erratic and eager to make a fool of herself. Sorry. The friday show should be with a different panel, but just not this one!

Hey you mentioned Christian the lion video. I had seen it before on you tube, but when Oprah showed it, it had special meaning to me. My oldest daughter has decided to cut her father, myself and her sisters out of her life to make a long story short. When I first saw this video on Oprah's show I thought, if you love something set it free if it comes back to you it is yours....I remembered how that lion jumped into their arms!!!
It had only been a few days then that my daughter hadn't spoken to me, well now it has turned into a couple months. She has had our first grandson and she still wants no contact with us. I just keep thinking of this video and seeing how that lion remembered where he came from and hoping she remembers too. Thanks for sharing that video!!!!

moonhues I adore your drawing. Too cute!!! haha will you friend me on fb? i write songs/produce teenage girls so I'm also an artist. maybe we can hang... I like the O site but it's feels like we're hiding behind words sometimes--I want to see everyone's kid photos, art, websites! like on fb. Maybe it's my Sag rising, but I crave more openess! magic should not stay in hiding because someone might try to advertise. the price is too high!

I wanted to suggest a possible future Oprah Show. Being that October is Breast Cancer Awareness, I think it would be FABULOUS to have a survivor show for those who have survived all types of cancer. Possibly a "DREAM COME TRUE" type show...granting wishes and making their ultimate dream a reality. I can tell you my mother in law's dream come true would be to be invited as an audience guest to see Oprah. My mother in law is truly the ULTIMATE OPRAH FAN and has been for many years. I honestly don't think she's missed a single show in at least 10 years, she subcribes to her magazine, reads her recommended books, is always passing along advice or suggestions heard on Oprah, and considers her to be very uplifting and motivational! My mother in law recently received a clean bill of health after battling ovarian cancer that nearly cost her her life. It was a very long uphill battle for both her and my father in law who was by her side the whole way. My husband is 1 of 6 kids and each of the kids took their turn to fly in for what they anticipated would possibly be their last visit. Miraculously...today she is healthy and doing well. Still building up her strength, as it was not too long ago (I think about a year now). But each and every day is a blessing as she continues to do better. I cannot even imagine the thrill of being able to surprise her with a visit to the Oprah Show. Sincerely, Lisa Schwartz dnlschwartz@earthlink.net

I was very, very down and sad, spending Christmas Day by myself hunkered down under the covers playing on the internet. I checked out Facebook and joined wondering if anyone would even remember me let alone want to be friends. I was, indeed, pleasantly surprised, humbled, thrilled, relieved, and uplifted. Friends are wonderful...I'm learning to be a better one. FACEBOOK ROCKS!!

Hi! I have been trying to click on the facebook link that states that "Oprah wants to know how facebook has changed or impacted your life," and I've been unsuccessful.

I just wanted you to know that facebook has empowered me. It has helped me step out of my shell and now I have created "Hannah's Poetry Corner." I write my own poems and copyright them and post them for other friends to see. This also enables me to receive feedback on my poetry.

Through facebook I have also been able to come into contact with publishers and other writers who have been willing to help me get started with my life long dream! My book....Silence Speaks:Sounds From Within.

I believe I am kin to Maya Angelou in a spiritual way. Writing is a part of my being. I am freed by every pen stroke I make!

I am a friend of Oprah's on facebook. Feel free to peek into my corner! :)

Thank you for your time.

I'm so glad you producers are blogging!

I LOVE The Youtube lion video ... I still cry everytime I see it (I did when I watched your show too).

Keep blogging ... we love it!

With the recent recession, and the large number of unemployed people, more people are grasping at any ways to make some money. As a result they are more vulnerable to scams that are sophisticated enough and organized.
Unlike the Nigerian email scams, which offers money via email, this one is set up in a much more sophisticated manner and organized by underground businesses that prey on vulnerable unemployed individuals, both men and women.

"In general terms, a team in a delivery van (generally white) or SUV will cruise the streets looking for a potential score... anyone who looks like they may have disposable income. They will honk, wave and be very aggressive at getting your attention. If you ignore them, you are lucky. However, many people will give in to their curiosity and see what all the excitement is about.

Upon luring the potential score to their van, they begin their rehearsed routine with a passion and excitement worthy of an Oscar nomination. They are very persuasive and aggressive. The drivers generally tell the person that they have fallen into an unbelievably fortunate situation. They present themselves as delivery drivers and/or installers who have just finished a job, telling the score that by inventory error, they have extra hi-fi speakers unaccounted for. They often tell the score that they need to get rid of them before they return to the warehouse and have to give them back to their boss. Some have presented themselves as speaker company representatives, while some have presented themselves as drivers for local audio/entertainment companies.

They present themselves very well and are very believable. They show delivery invoices, business cards to look very legitimate. Then they show you speakers they describe as high-end speakers worth well over $1000 per pair. They justify this claim with colorful ads in audiophile magazines or slick brochures listing a very high retail price. Even the web sites displayed prominently on the box justify the high price for the speakers. When the potential buyer begins to walk away, the driver then asks what the person is willing to pay for the "high-quality" speakers. Buyers have paid anywhere from $200-$1000 for a pair, thinking they made a great deal. The drivers have commonly been known to ask for extra "beer money" for giving the buyers such a great deal.

For people who are in the market for speakers, this may seem like a great deal. However, there are audio review web sites, such as AudioReview.com, which have given poor ratings on these speakers. Many have felt ripped off and tried successfully, or unsuccessfully to get a refund.

People who are not interested usually receive an increased dose of intimidation and pressure from these salespersons who don't like to take "no" for an answer. Some are lucky enough to walk away. Some give in to the intimidation because of fear. These people may assume because they got such a great deal, they could recoup their costs by selling the speakers to a friend or to someone on eBay, only to discover that it is easier said than done with the product's lack of name-recognition and poor reputation.

The salespersons may give the buyer the impression that he or she is benefitting from a "shady" deal, giving no receipt and hoping the buyer would feel too guilty to ask for a refund. However, if you want a refund you are entitled within 3-days by law. You may pursue it by contacting the manufacturer or the local distributor.

An actual case reported on April 2001 by one of Scam Shield's own staff members was investigated. The speakers sold to him by the questionable salespersons listed a phone number to JAM Entertainment. A call to John Mehaffey of JAM Entertainment led the staff member to Mike Amoroso of the manufacturer Audio Wood Products (also known as Audiofile) in Chino Hills, California, which ships the product to regional/local distributors who have independent contractors (van drivers) who sell the speakers. Mr. Amoroso of Audi Wood Products referred our staff member to Orka Distributors/O-Town Sound in Longwood, FL. The manager of Orka Distributors denied any responsibility for the salespersons who sold his speakers.

Each person in the chain claimed to be running a legitimate business without any direct ties to the contract salespersons. The fact that these van drivers are provided with the means to deceive consumers and are still in business probably means that someone has done their legal homework.

It seems coincidental that there can be so many similarities in the marketing tactics nationwide and even worldwide without an organized and coordinated effort. Many elements of the sales pitch are consistent worldwide. Even the supplemental "beer money" is not an isolated incident. The distributors maintain their legitimacy, even though they work closely with these contractors on a routine basis. Responsibility does rest on the salesperson based on the misleading sales tactics they choose to use, but what about those that coordinate and train these people how to use these tactics? What about those who provide the misleading materials used by the salespeople? What about the company that provides the vans for these people to drive? "

It has happened nationwide and I was unfortunately a victim as well. I am unemployed and I needed some way to make some income. I, like a fool, fell for this line and sinker. But rather than keeping this shameful secret to myself, I want to try to make sure that nobody ever gets scammed by this scheme ever again. If a large show like yours talks about this scheme, I'm sure that everyone in America would become aware of these predators preying on unemployed individuals and stealing their life savings.

Richard
