Friday Live 3.20.09

Posted on Mar 11, 2009 10:18 AM

Hello! I am producing a Friday Live show with Ali Wentworth and Mark Consuelos next Friday, March 20th. Live TV is such an exhilarating experience and these shows are especially fun to put together. They're a rush because the format is anything goes, and you never know what the week's news is going to bring or what exciting news Oprah has - like a new puppy! Let me know if you have any great stories you'd like to see. And stay tuned!

It would be great to see a Friday Live without Gayle - Ali and Mark will finally get the chance to say something!

I just started reading an exciting book and would love to see the author talking about it. I found it at Amazon, the author is Mary Suzanne Lopez and it's called All The Way Home. It starts out with a plane crash. She rescued her kidnapped children when the American Embassy refused to help and trekked thru the jungle to safety. It looks like it could be a great movie - her descriptions make you feel you are there. She says it's all true, so perhaps you could interview her. A lot of us moms wonder what we would do in her place if our kids were kidnapped and taken to a foreign country. I haven't finished it, but it looks like there's even more to the story. Thanks. And please let me know when she'll be on your show so I can watch!

LOVE ALI, SUZIE ORMAN , AND DAVE RAMSEY, WOULD LIKE TO SEE THEM TOGETHER ON THE SHOW.
WOULD LOVE TO SEE OPRAH'S NEW DOG, SADIE, ALL DRESSED UP ON FRIDAY LIVES.
AS A AUTHOR ON COINCIDENCES, FOR CHARITY, AND A FOUNDER OF A CHARITY, WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE AUTHOR OF GOD WINKS, KERMIT THE FROG MUPPET, MYSELF AS A AUTHOR ON COINCIDENCES FROM GOD, AND ANOTHER AUTHOR ON COINCIDENCES. KERMIT THE FROG IS ONE OF MY BIGGEST COINCIDENCES IN DEC, 2005.
LOVE FRIDAY LIVE, KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!

Hi Producerep,
I love Friday Live! Starting off with "Hot Topics" is always interesting. I'd like to see what's going on with some of our favorite entertainers such as Robin Thicke.

I would love it if ALi, Mark, Gayle and Oprah would find a way to NOT talk about the Chris Brown/Rhianna thing, it is so played out.

I would love to see the panel discuss Jimmy Fallon's first two weeks on-air as the new host of the "Late Night" series.

WOULD LOVE TO SEE TIM MCGRAW AND TAYLER SWIFT SING TOGETHER, THEY ARE AWESOME COUNTRY SINGERS!!!!!!!

Hi Eric, Now that Oprah is Skype'ing' all of the time, I'd like to hear about how others around the world are using Skype and how it's changed their lives. I think Skype is the most under rated thing going today, and would love to hear the stories on how others are using it and for what purposes.

Keep up the good work! If you do select this topic, I'd rather be there in person rather than being Skyped in :)

I really like the Friday segments/changes. Like the live talk and intervention. I personally would like to see Oprah, and Gayle continue on the show weekly, but if I may, please see if you can bring in two new people weekly as part of the panel. In other words, why Alie and Mark weekly? I like seeing people, whether they are celebrities or not, who are helping the world with their kindness and deeds, and thus making the world a better place. Not those just taking up space and time without substance.
I will see if my opinion makes a difference. Thanks.

I would like Oprah to learn about these vision boards called Miracle Maps. I truly believe Oprah would love them! I do! Thank You! Have a great day!

OGAM (Oprah, Gayle, Ali, Mark) Fridays are great! I think everyones personalities mesh well together. So how did you guys pick this group of people?

I'd like to see the panel discuss the question everyone has been avoiding. Where did the money go - any of it, all of it. If the banks lost billions (with a B) where did it go? If Bernie Madoff bilked thousands out of their entire life savings - where is it? That much money simply can't disappear.

I think you are right on track.... I don't think Mark has much input and rightly so. Let's get a variety of panel members on there...

I would love for Oprah to take time & ask the audience what's going on in their lives. I think being an icon, you can't relate to what the everyday person goes through. Though you can read an article, talk to co-workers, etc. unless you're out here living paycheck-to-paycheck, a person really can't relate to what some Americans are REALLY going through in this economy.

With that being said, why not do a heart-2-heart segment one day? Affording guests the ability to speak on everyday problems they're facing. Maybe start off with an open ended question like, ¿the economy how are most of you dealing in these turbulent times?¿

It's just a thought. For once I would like to see something the ordinary Moe can relate to regarding such topics. I'm a fan but sometimes I feel when dealing with financial issue topics, they mostly cater to the middle class and above. Thereby, completely forgetting the working class stiff who would love to hear advice regarding getting their credit back in shape etc. Though you might not be able to relate, everyone in the job market does not possess a portfolio, stocks, and a 401k.

Hi producerEP,
I am a producer myself of a local TV show in Nashville and some times it's really crazy... I have created a group on Facebook call "Latina Social Club"; we are all business women who get together once a month to chat and have lunch and help each other. Some people here call me "Latina Oprah" jajaa even my husband call me like that in front of his friends... I don't have the power nor the money that she has but i do have the tenacity of helping and giving others what i can and fight for what is right. I hope some day to meet Oprah and have a one on one interview. Funny story... I live next door to where her Drama teacher used to live... my husband meet her before she moved to chicago because she used to come to the house next door to talk to her friend and drama teacher Mr. Cox... And here I am coming from cuba and ended up next door to one of Oprah's favorite people... anyways.... have fun on the next Friday show and I will be thinking of you while i meet my latina social club friends...

Hugs from Nashville,
Sheyla

I think that Friday Live should do a show on eating disorders and how they can potentially destroy your life. Hollywood focuses so much on body image. This can be detrimental to young girls. Girls should know that beauty truly comes from within. Trying to teach young girls that (or believe that myself at 22!) is nearly impossible in today's world! Anorexia (and all of the other eating disorders) can completely rob you of your spirit. It is a topic that seems to be overlooked a lot. Of, it just doesn't get discussed too often. I am curious how many girls are affected by this each and every day. It not only hurts them, but their families who care for them as well.

hello eric
since you are producing next friday's show can you have them answer this question? While watching the show with tyra and oprah i had a question that they did not ask the young pregnant lady at the end. i wanted to know how long her abuser will be in jail?? i think that she was shaky saying she was strong but the longer he is in jail, the stronger she can become for her and the baby.

thanks
i love friday's live with ali, mark, gayle, and oprah; it is nice to have mark as a male give his opinion.

from the news reports i have seen they cant find the money...it is hidden in off shore accounts.

HELLO ERIC!
Since you are the producer of Friday's Live... Have you ever consider the idea of the fan fiction that is growing on the internet. That would be interesting to have commments on.
Lourdes Rivera

I would like to hear more about what Jim Cramer and John Stewart were
discussing about corporate "shenanigans," that have gone on.
Would be great to see John Stewart discuss on Oprah.

I would love to know if Oprah is going to be making another book club selection. Also, the fact that Oprah Friday's Live is a great kick off to the weekend, you should do a weekly roundup of new books that are out there---maybe have author's on. People love to curl up with a good book on a weekend and what better time or place to discover what's new in the world of books then on Friday's with Oprah!

A topic I'd love to see addressed on the show is caring for aging parents. Perhaps you've done shows on this in the past and I've missed them, but I have a 91 year old father who is dependent on his children for his care. He lives on his own in an apartment, but he should actually be in assisted living due to sight and auditory disabilities, however, his finances preclude this. His 3 daughters do his shopping, finances and doctor appts, but his days are spent alone, relying on the television for company. We are all left with a sense of guilt that we can't spend enough time with him. I'm sure many working adults are sandwiched between caring for children still at home, working at their jobs, and caring for elderly/disabled parents, and the problem will only increase as people marry and have children later in life, and live longer lives. What can we do as a society to plan for caring for adults as they age?

Hey there, I'm a writer/producer in Hollywood and I think you should do a story on how the recession has affected the Hollywood community. Everyone from local businesses (florists, caterers, etc) to writers, directors, producers, actors, agents, managers, etc. It's BAD. REALLY BAD.

Hi EP, my friends and i are coming to the March 27 show. I think it would be fun for the audience to ask the panel questions . Or, let the panel ask questions to audience members. Anyway, we are so excited to see what you have planned. Sincerely, the ladies from Utah

Hi Eric,
My name is Alice LaVonne, you called me back in 2003, you were responding to an e-mail I'd sent in. You told me from the beginning that I may never hear back from you. You requested some video tapes of our daugther, Brittany, and I asked that you would send them back because I'd already prepaid to have them returned, not knowing at the time I should have sent copies. You indeed mailed them back, unfortunately I sent them in again prepaid again because I KNEW it was our turn to be on the show. The show topic was more fitting to our true story, it read: Have you ever experienced a coincidence so profound it made the hairs on the back of your neck stand up? Or, have you ever gotten a sign that let you know your're on the right track? Maybe from a fairy godmother or a higher power? I think the show topic was from rags to riches, or something of that nature in the beginning. Long story short, she wasn't considered for the show.
Since 1996, I've e-mailed, snail mailed, sent in photo albums, post cards and documented our daughters every move with landing the role of "young Sethe" in Ms. Winfrey's movie "BELOVED". I believe in my heart that Ms. Winfrey should be aware of how the making of "Beloved" changed our lives forever. Does she know that together, Brittany and I turned our experience into a learning center for kids?
I have 13 years of countless coincidences down on paper, not that we search for them, they just show up!
Here's an example: Brittany was born premature with a speech impediment. My Auntie Emily told us not to worry, she said that Brittany would oneday grow up to become the next Oprah Winfrey. I didn't understand her comment nor did I question her, shortly after her comment, Auntie passed away. We were shocked, she didn't appear sick. On the day of Auntie's homegoing service, we dropped Brittany off at pre-school. As I entered Auntie's church, there she laid, red roses were placed in her hands and I remember the pastor saying, now she's free from all pain, she has passed over The Jordan River. My tears stopped and a calming piece came over me. When we reached Brittany's school, her teacher approached me w/a piece of paper in her hands. She said that Brittany had spent alot of time in the art area today, she asked how to spell "God Knows". As the teacher handed me the piece of paper, there laid a women lying down w/red roses in her hands, in a box w/blue water in front! It's been 15 years, and we still have this picture. Somehow, Brittany saw what we saw, even though we were miles away from her.
To help Brittany w/her speech, I enrolled her into drama classes. I thought being around other children her age would help develop her speech. 4 years later we would get a call from her agents asking that Brittany audition for a role of a slave girl. Brittany auditions and lands the role, the movie belongs to Oprah!
To help Brittany connect w/the role, I purchased and read the novel to her, leaving some parts out trying to leave it on a 6 year olds level. Then my mother pulls out photos of her pass and Brittany questions a photo of a lady standing by s tree stomp. The photo is in black and white, and the lady is wearing pants, boots and a dress. Brittany asked why? My mother explains.
When we arrive in Philly, Brittany runs up to a stranger and shouts "mommy she's in my movie". The lady touches her cheek and smiles, no words are exchanged. That's exactly what Auntie did the day she told me Brittany would cross paths with Oprah, she touched her cheek...I remember, my mom saw it too. The crew person looks at Brittany and askes her how she knew that? She says, I just know.
Unknowing to us until the screening of " Beloved" in New York City, would we find out that 124 Bluestone Rd. looks just like our Auntie's childhood home. My mother said they too had a sick dog, a icehouse, a tree stomp and a dirt road that passed right out front of their house. Remember the 30 women, grandma belonged to a group of ladies from the church called The Sunshine Group, they too sang from the porch, they never entered, Grandpa didn't aprove, he had his OWN spirits. The doctors said that Brittany was born 28 days early, there is a song on the songtrack of Beloved titled, 28 days! I think she was born right on time.
Brittany's non-speaking role takes place at the hanging tree. Her on screen grandmother is wearing the same exact clothing as the lady in the photo from my mother's scrapbook down to the boots on her feet.
On that same night of filming, Brittany does things that in fact let me know that Auntie was there. It's hard to put in words, but I could feel it. I spoke to God and surrendered it all to Him, I said, if you guide my feet, I'll follow. I thanked God for allowing our child of color to be featured on the big screen, I asked God to send others of color so that we could rise as a people. I believe God was listening, he told me, wish granted, and I sat back and waited remembering our talk that cold damp October night. Something shifted on the inside and I returned home and couldn't sleep for 2 days. I was headed somewhere fast and I kept asking God to show up and leave me somekind of clue, and He did. Oneday, I found it in a tree...I'll explain. Everytime it shows up, I take a picture and I document it.
Everytime I looked in the face of "young Sethe" I saw pain, her eyes, not my child but children everywhere are in silent pain. The look said everything w/out saying a word.
I quit my high paying job and opened up our home to families in need of quality childcare. Lord, have mercy. It's been almost 13 years and 65 children plus and I've never advertised. We named the learning center " A Beloved Start", babies have taken their 1st. steps here, children learn to read and write before school.
I knew the center had to be great, because Ms.Winfrey is a voice of so many. She teaches us how to dream, then she teaches us to dream a dream bigger then we could ever image. The children and I made a vision board, we hung it proudly in our center, things hoped for, just like prayer.
While preparing to celebrate our new president, I awoke on Jan 17th to find our center underwater. I was devastated, I was mad at God. I asked Him, how he could lead me here and then watch me loose everything I'd worked so hard for? No job means no house, no food, no car. I contacted all the parents and not one family lift me, they all stayed. I cried like a baby for days, my home had to make a shift. I was force to touch everything I owned, that's when I told God, I have everything. My hands had to touch everything I'd worked for, for the pass 12 plus years. Lord, have mercy. I have everything, you even put a man of color in the white house while I was at my lowest point, Tyler Perry kept rising, he was unlocking doors that were once silenced. He was making films about our enter most feelings that we don't dare share w/folks. I once saw my own life on film, displayed "brilliantly". I gave Brittany a secret service name " Brilliant". I call her that when she's away at college, struggling with her work, I can hear it in her voice that never showed up during speech therapy. Calling her Brilliant, helps her rise up. She made the deans list!
I never told the construction crew about our vision board and flags, but they never took them down. Long story short, my insurance company said they were coming, but never showed up fast enough. My Dad spoke to man holding the doors at church and said we'll be there the same day and he did.
Brittany, young Sethe, was away at college wanting to help but couldn't. She found her calling while helping out in the center. She's studying to become a child psychiarist @ VSU.
What God has for me, it's for me. My wish is for Ms. Winfrey to find out about us and share our vision. Beloved remains here, come see and let the blessing flow.
I knew a day would come that I would beable to share our true and uplifing story, ask us again.

Mr. Tolle tells my story best....A New Earth, ch.2 pg. 58 If the shutters are closed , the light cannot come in. When you yield internally, when you surrender, a new dimension of consciousness opens up. If action is possible or necessary, your action will be in alignment with the whole and supported by creative intelligence, the conditioned consciousness which in a state of inner openness you become one with.Circumstances and people then become helpful, cooperative.
COINCIDENCES HAPPEN!

Hi! I realize that a large chunk of the Oprah Winfrey audience are mothers, and that is why there seems to be so many shows on frazzled, stressed-out families struggling to keep it all together and make "me"-time. But how about another perspective -- there are women out there who do NOT want children, perhaps because they haven't find a suitable partner, or decided to pursue a career, or just plain don't have the motherly desire to reproduce. I am getting married soon and my fiance and I are not planning on having children. It's not that we don't like kids, we love our own nieces and nephews and know how important it is to nurture and care for our future generation. We just don't want children! It would be great to hear from others who feel the same way and are tired of telling people that they aren't going to reproduce...

Hi Eric,

I thought the concept of the Friday Live Show was to have the panel talk about what is happening in the news, political &/or entertainment?

Instead all we the audience are getting is celebrities coming on to promote their products Steve Harvey (book), Tyler Perry (movie), Jennifer Hudson (CD,tour),Jimmy Fallon (late nite). How is this any different then the Mond-Thurs shows?
Last Friday the only live part was 1 rehearsed comment from Mark about Bernie Madoff. We then went to 10 minutes on cinnamon buns (yawn!). The lion story was heartwarming, but why would a more then 30 year old story be on a Live Show? The video & gentlemen were on the Today Show last summer with their same story.

I would like the panel TO BE the show. No guests. What is the point of having a panel if they are simply going to interview some celebrity. Oprah can do that herself.

If you belive the panel cannot engage in provocative conversation for the show maybe they should be replaced. I understand Gayle being there but could Oprah enlighten her audience as to the reason for Mark & Ali being there. Just by their limited comments over the previous shows it is clear that they cannot have a panel discussion of any depth.

Hello! Saturday March 21st is World Down Syndrome Awareness Day. It would be so awesome if Oprah could help raise awareness of the amazing people with Downs syndrome who are so often the victums of negative, incorrect stereotypes.

I enjoy the live show on Fridays. I am Connecticut native who grew up watching Gayl King on the evening news.

Hi Eric,

I have a fantastic and inspirational idea for a show. Entrepreneurs starting a business in this economy. I own a small business an though it has been a rough start (started selling my product 11.08) I am managing to thrive.

I personally enjoy hearing about small businesses that have earned great success in spite of bumps in the road. I think that American needs to hear positive stories with uplifting yet realistic endings.

And if you have any interest I think that my story just so happens to work beautifully in this format. Please contact me if there is any interest on your end. :)

I'm so excited to see that Kelly Clarkson has been added for this Friday's show! Will there be an opportunity for fans to Skype in and ask a question?

I just heard on Twitter that one of the new puppies IVAN died over the weekend from Parvo. Is that true?? How sad for Oprah. And Sadie might be sick too. My heart goes out to Oprah. I held a puppy in my arms as he died from parvo in 1997 and it is a horrible death. There seems to be a new more deadly strain out there now. I will keep Oprah and the new puppy in my prayers.

Two new people each week would add a great deal to this format...Mark and Ali add NOTHING. Are they only famous for being MARRIED to famous people? Really what have they accomplished...why would we care about what they think? If they are not replaced soon I may not be able to keep watching. They disgust me.

I think I have a BRILLIANT idea: I've had it for a while, but procrastinated with suggesting it, because I figured you all get swamped with tons of ideas all the time; but with this new blog thingamajigger, I figured I'd jump at the chance to suggest it. So here goes¿

I love Tyler Perry and he was great as an in-person guest. However, wouldn't it be fun if occasionally Madea Skyped-in on Friday's live shows to offer her two cents on that week¿s issues? That way, Tyler Perry won't have to fly to the Oprah show all the time, and he can do it from the comfort of his home (or wherever he chooses to be). I KNOW that "she" will have a hilarious but often truthful take on that week's current events.

AND in the long-term, (please send this to Tyler), I think Madea needs her OWN radio show, where she interviews celebrity guests and gives advice; possibly even her own advice column, and whatever else is necessary. Don't you think? That's my two-and-a-half cents.

But for now, Madea occasionally Skyping live--THAT would be a treat!!

Thanks for reading my essay :-D

P.S. -- People: let's not bash Mark and Ali. They are fabulous. Spread the love, not the hateration, geepers creepers!

Hi Eric. I would like to do a surprise during a Friday Live Show (smile). I am incredibly lucky to have gotten tickets to the March 27th taping. I will be attending with my best girlfriend whom I have known since third grade, my sister, and my much appreciated "mommyhood comrade". These three women are just incredible people. The trip started as a 30th birthday celebration, but turned into a mommy-away vaction to see Oprah and just celebrate being friends. You should have heard each of them when I called to tell them we got tickets - it was like having the greatest Christmas gift. The preparation for the trip alone has been a total hoot. From unexpected visits that required a photo with "O" (the magazine), to an online fashion show to see what we would wear to the taping we have already chalked this experience up as a once-in-a-lifetime, but I would LOVE to make it a "I never dreamt in a MILLION years" trip for them. Don't you think Oprah and Gayle would like to team up with me to surprise them? I love surprising great people, and they are certainly that. Besides, it's nice to remind people that dreams do come true. So many people laugh and do the "oh okay" when I say we hope to meet Oprah someday. March is a lucky month and I have faith that it just might happen (smile).

Hi Eric: When I first learned about the concept of the Friday Live shows I was very excited - timely topics and many different opinions. Unfortunately I have been a bit disappointed. NOT the subjects - they are great and I look forward to more of these shows. With even more panelists. What has disappointed me - and yes even annoyed me and my friends - is the format. It is exactly like the View where everyone interrupts each other and they constantly talk on top of each other. Sometimes it sounds just like cackling hens - and a rooster struggling to crow loud enough to be heard. As a result it becomes impossible to understand what anyone is saying and the viewer misses half the discussion ¿ and the jokes. I have been getting very frustrated and have yelled "manners!" and thrown my slipper at the TV. Which annoyed my husband but actually helped with the picture since the slipper dusted the screen.

This insult of sound must be especially hard for those with hearing impairment. I have even put on the closed captioning on my TV to try and read what is being said but it comes up on the screen all jumbled and impossible to decipher. Hopefully this is something that can be fixed.

Already have the VCR set for tomorrow¿s show.

you need to strike a deal with Ellen Degeneres - IF she wants on the cover of O, she needs to come to Chicago and do a Friday's Live with the others

Hi Eric, i have a really fresh idea for a show. Fine art. It seems everything has to be animated to be seen on TV. Painting and drawing are exceptional parts of the human experience, and rarely shown except on PBS. You shown musicians, actors, fashion, etc. Why not art, ever? And i have an art stoey with a female slant;

When rattling off the names of great artists at random, rarely does a women's name come up. Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Picasso, Van Gogh,
Mattise, Warhol, Klimt, ETC.

What about Cassatt, Kahlo, O Keefe, to name a few. The list is short and hard to bring to mind. Women were never taken seriously tho they were just as talented. Until recently, they weren¿t allowed to show, just hobby painters.

Throughout history women were expected to care for home and children, and not much else. They were not free to be sculptors, writers, artists, architects, priests, or any leadership positions, with some rare exceptions, such as Queens
Women, because of their repressed sexuality, never painted men, in sensual poses. Men painted women this way, an excepted art form.

But for a woman to do that makes her a fallen woman, a "Bad Woman". Women were not supposed to express sexual desire, this is still evident today in primitive societies, especially Islamic, where they must cover up, be submissive, and even female castration.

Ginger James' work is important as she is the first Woman artist to paint men in reclining and sensual poses. No woman has yet to paint a collection of models of the opposite sex in the manner of Mattise, Picasso, Modiglianni to name a few. She is the breakthrough artist on the wave of women's rights and Freedom of sexual expression. Woman as the creator and viewer of eroticism, instead of the passive model.
Why not do a story about this, i would be glad to come, my website url is on my Facebook page if you'd like to see more. Have a great day and thanks for all your great work on Oprah! Ginger James

I would like to see more of the behind the scenes people at Harpo in front of the camera! You could even do a live interview and end it with the person getting the job at Harpo studios. Oprah has only really done one show about this, and I think it could be fascinating...even for people who have no background in television.

I'd love to see Steve Harvey join the Friday Live crew. He's so funny and intelligent - I love listening to him!

I agree...Gayle acts like it's her show. I'm pretty tired of her and her opinions.

I think that having Ali Wentworth on the show is embarrassing. Its like your never-funny-cousin always trying to bud in on conversations when they have nothing of interest to say. Instead of listening to other hosts or guests, she is just waiting for a chance to speak and grab the spotlight. Saying 'trying to be best friends with Tyler Perry so he'll buy her a Bentley, wishing she could have one of the puppies like Oprah's so that she can be Oprah's new best friend...and the Justin Timberlake fashion show segment was beyond embarrassing and Justin Timberlake and others could not complete their thoughts. Please don't rehash that she was funny on Seinfeld...that was years ago and her lines were written by a pro!! Let me just end by saying HDTV is not her friend.

Hey Eric! I hope you read this and consider it a suggestion! LOVED THE COUNTRY SHOW this week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now...how about the "unsung songwriters" who provide so much to the performer...bare their souls in their creations...and doing a show on them! People like Gary Harrison and Matracea Berg who wrote, Wild Angels for Martina...Wrong Side of Memphis and The Dreaming Fields for Trisha...and there are so many, many others. I believe Gary Harrison wrote "Broken Toys" for child abuse as well for BJ Thomas.

These two and so many others like them, often sit in the shadows...working their craft every single day. It would be a real delight to see them honored!
