Season Premiere

Posted on Aug 21, 2009 6:11 PM

I have a new found respect for people who blog daily. I'm lucky if I brush my teeth daily!* Anyway... it's 6:00 on a Friday night and I'm getting ready for the weekend. So why not blog? First of all, thank you, thank you, thank you Oprah for TOAL (Trip of a Lifetime), our two-week cruise you may have read about in the tabloids. Let's just say don't believe everything you read. Unless I'm writing it. Then believe away.... So here's the deal: two weeks of non-stop fun in six countries (including the vatican, which is apparently its own country. Who knew?) I won't say too much more. You'll just be annoyed you weren't there. Or, I'll tell you about the one bad thing that happened. I got stung by a jellyfish in Malta. Ouch! I learned that you're supposed to wash the sting with vinegar -- not pee like you may have heard.

And with that I take you to the season premiere. Here's a fun little promo link for season 24: http://www.youtube.com/user/OPRAH. Gotta love the Black Eyed Peas. It's legal to post that, right? I am working on the first two shows: Whitney Houston and..... Can't tell ya the second one yet. But it is going to be good! And I promise I'll tell you once we make the official announcement. In the meantime, any great Whitney moments? Feel free to share and thanks for reading!

*If my dentist is reading this, that's a joke. Twice a day with floss!

Surprise!

Posted on Apr 30, 2009 5:14 PM

It has been far too long since my last blog, but this is a pretty busy time of year for us Harponians. Believe it or not, we stop taping shows for the season next Friday. But don't worry that doesn't mean reruns just yet. Anyway, we taped a show today on some of Oprah's best surprises. There is no better shoot than a great surprise. Lots of lying, furtive phone calls and sneaking around - all for a good cause! And if all goes according to plan, you get to experience one of the best (at the very least, most unforgettable) days of a person's life. You can't help but think, and they pay me for this? I once helped surprise a group of kids in Brooklyn when we announced that the entire school was going to a Knicks game. The kids were so excited they were rolling around on the floor. But my all time favorite surprise was when we reunited a family who had been separated during the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. The look on their faces during the show says more about the significance of the moment than I could ever write, and it's certainly an experience that I will always cherish. Another great memory to make me appreciate why we do what we do...

Late Night

Posted on Mar 18, 2009 11:50 PM

The best time to write a script is late at night - no phone, no e-mail, no sleep! That's what I'm doing right now. Well, actually I'm procrastinating. I figure I could update my blog or fill out my NCAA bracket. You'd think being one of the few men around here I'd have an advantage, but these women know their hoops. And they trash talk! I'm working on Friday's show. I can't say too much, but there is going to be a fun little surprise. Maybe I've already said too much..... But I'm sure my secret's safe with you. I interviewed Kelly Clarkson today. Gotta love her. She couldn't be more down to earth, but she's from Texas so she complained about our Chicago weather. We'll talk in January. I also spoke to Jenny McCarthy. She's from Chicago so all she wanted to talk about was pizza. I also talked to Dr. Oz, who had me hold a human brain. That was a first. Just your average day at the office I guess. Anyway, back to my script. Thanks for listening!

Friday Live 3.20.09

Posted on Mar 11, 2009 10:18 AM

Hello! I am producing a Friday Live show with Ali Wentworth and Mark Consuelos next Friday, March 20th. Live TV is such an exhilarating experience and these shows are especially fun to put together. They're a rush because the format is anything goes, and you never know what the week's news is going to bring or what exciting news Oprah has - like a new puppy! Let me know if you have any great stories you'd like to see. And stay tuned!
