Losing Weight In The Public Eye With Star Jones, Valerie Bertinelli & Marie Osmond

Posted on Mar 25, 2009 5:03 PM

I just finished working on a show with three fascinating women.... Star, Valerie and Marie. Losing weight can be hard, but it can be even more difficult doing it in front of millions of people. For the first time, Oprah is going to sit down for a REAL conversation with Star Jones about the her 160 pound weight loss, her controversial surgery and her departure from "The View." Valerie Bertinelli is going to show off her new bikini body -- and believe it or not, Marie Osmond opens up about her life-long struggle with weight.

I really hope you will all watch -- It airs next April 1st (no fooling) :-) and I guarantee you will be enlightened. Thanks, Dana

Sounds like a great show! Oprah is very lucky to have such wonderful producers who work so very hard.

Hey Dana, will definitely check it out...can't imagine making myself vulnerable about my body in the way these women do...yeesh!

Along these same lines, is O! ever going to do a show on growing your own fruits and veggies? I am in a social network of gardeners and we are really hoping she will. We need her support, and so do people who simply can't afford the grocery store any longer!

thanks,
Jean Ann

I really do hope that Star is honest about her weight loss. I did not appreciate her lack of honesty. Oprah has been in the public eye thru all her weight issues but has never once lied about it. If you want to hide or keep it private stay out of the public eye. I will be watching as I do every day!! Love Oprah.

Hi Dana! I am looking forward to this show! And hope to hear more truth about weight loss.... I've definitely been there. I am one of those whose weight goes up and down. Recently, well at least during the past year, I have struggled emotionally with the sharing of my story in the book "Switching Time". I've had gastric bypass surgery in 2001 and lost 175 pounds only to gain half back. In sharing my abusive past I believe my emotions got the best of me. Maybe I am emotional eater, only problem is I graze and never eat any one large meal at any one time. Pretzels have become my "graze" food. Interviews, television and having my picture taken over and over again have me feeling uncomfortable. I am not happy with my weight at this time. And am looking forward to hearing any tips that may help boost my self esteem!

Hi Dana,
This sounds like a geat show which I will definitely be watching. Weight loss is something I am about to do and I am going to invite millions to watch me (and hopefully root for me).

As part of my re-visioning my life I am hosting my very own docu-reality show on the Internet! Maybe I'm crazy but I think I will be inspired by the women in my audience and they will be inspired by me.

Anyway, I'll be watching to hear how these ladies have handled the whole thing. Thanks for the blog...very interesting for "O" followers.

Today's program with Michael J. Fox was wonderful!

The one thing that bothers me about seeing Valerie and Marie is that they worked for Nutrisystem and got meals delivered so of course they lost weight. They had to in order to collect their salaries. But most of us cannot afford this type of program. So from my point of view, it is unrealistic.

I did love the extending life program as it was realistic. I am now eating more vegetables and fruit as suggested in the program. I love this type of program as it is so informative and doable. Give me this type of program anytime.

Marie was on nutrisystems while doing dwts. She didn't become their spokesman until after she lost the weight.yes she used nutrisystems but she also worked her butt off and money was never her priority her health was.As if she needs more money anyway. The woman could stop working today and never work again and I am sure she and all 8 of her kids would live quite comfortably!!!!Watch the show and you will see.

Great job on the show today Dana! I had just read Valeri's book which I thought was really good. I was never a huge Star Jones fan or anything, but I really thought her story was interesting today. All of those women were very inspirational and after watching Michael J. Fox yesterday it sure seems like if you can exercise and you have the ability to go for a walk, run, or whatever, you sure should. Especially since you never know when some day you might not be able to. I know the guests these past two days have inspired our family to look at our health and reconsider what we eat and how much we exercise. Thanks for the inspiration!!

Dana,

As always it is great to hear weight loss stories, however, I do think there is a strong need to do stories on how the weight loss or gain affects families and loved ones. The attention is always put on the person struggling with their weight, but little is done or discussed about the ups and downs the family goes thru. I would love to see a show about that. I'm passionate about it because I've lived it.

Hi Producerdb,
I watched the show yesterday. I missed Valerie, but saw Marie and Star. I still don't know what to make of Star. She is someone that makes me uneasy. She says she's sorry, but action speak louder than words. I still see her as a selfish person. I still can't get past how rude and disrespectful she treated everyone on "The View" when she was there. I don't know what it is, but it's just something about her that I don't like.

Please read my comment Dana, I have struggled all my life with my weight and I blame my mother for most of the struggles. I have struggled with a lot of issues and now at the age of 46 I am starting to find peace and have been acknowledging my own actions. I have been given a wonderful opportunity to under go Gastric By-Pass Surgery and this is something that I wanted to have ever since I have heard of this type of weight loss. While I am on my way to win my battle against my own morbid obesity, I am seeking help for my two sons. They are very seriously morbid obese just like me. Their ages are 15 & 22 years of age. For the last two weeks my 15 year old has been having sleepless nights because of severe acid reflux, especially last night. He eats a lot, last night he eat an entire pizza all by himself in one sitting. While I am going to be having Gastric By-Pass surgery my two sons still needs help. I am hoping that you could help me to find away for either Jenny Craig, or Nurtisystem would be willing to sponsor their weight loss program, or even better if Dr. Oz could help them. Please, I am begging to for help.

Having had a gastric bypass in 1985 and a revision two years ago, I was totally impressed with the Star Jones interview. An avid Star fan, I was surprised by the interview............. finally.... finally someone who got it right about gastric bypass patients........... afterwards the therapy starts. Everyone must go through the phases and there are many. One compulsion is replaced by another........ if you CAN'T eat, you must replace with another compulsion.... shopping, sex, drinking, whatever else but it always comes back to food if you don't get the therapy. Everyone who loses that kind of weight thinks "everyone should love them" because they are "cute" and "thin". Not so. That was a wonderful and truthful interview.

I missed the beginning of the show but saw all of the interview with Star Jones. I felt what she had to say was genuine and I appreciated that she was so candid in telling her story. I never really liked the persona she put out there that I had seen in the past, but I liked the person I saw yesterday. I wanted to just sit down and talk with Star and ask more questions because I finally felt like I could relate to someone, and that I could be myself and just share. My friends just don't get it. Star does. Thanks for sharing Star.

Thank you Dana, great show!!!!!

Hi Dana
I loved the show! My name is Debbie Heyer and I was in the commercial "My Ideal Size" with Valerie! She is absolutely the nicest person, I had the best time that week! I also started Jenny Craig in March 2007, March 1st which I now consider my new Birthday. I lost 228 pounds in 17 months on the program and went from a size 36 to a size 2. I had never been in a gym and could not afford a personal trainer, so I had to figure it out. With the help of the Biggest Loser workout book and television show which I watch faithfully I developed a workout routine. I now embrace exercising wholeheartedly as well as nutrition, both have become my main focus, my outlook on life has done a complete 360! I am thankful everyday that the Jenny Craig program came into my life, it actually saved my life as I was convinced I would die before 50. Again loved the show, thanks for keeping it real!

Debbie

It pains me to see a show like this and Val as some sort of role model. How do you think this is going to end? Like Kirstie Alley. The problem with diets like Jenny Craig is you feel like you are starving all the time and you end up gaining even more weight than you lost. Plus -- your weight becomes the focus of your life.

Could you try to find people who lose weight and are able to focus on other things?

Dear kmltig
I have to correct you. When following the Jenny program correctly you are NEVER hungry. They use the volumetrics plan which allows you to add as many non starchy veges as you want and I mean as many as you want. I have lost a total of 228 pounds and was NEVER HUNGRY on the program and have kept everyone off for 9 months. Jenny teaches you portion control and yes it is life long you simply do not reach your goal and then go back to bad habits. They help you change your mind set, your body and your relationship with food, by doing this you feel so empowered and proud of yourself that every aspect of your life becomes energized. I am a living testimonial to the program and I can honestly say that I focus on a lot of different things including my zest for living my best possible life and experiencing all the fun stuff I missed out on for 25 years! Thanks Jenny!

Debbie

I just wanted to let you know that I loved seeing Valerie actually working out all drippy with sweat. So often we see the before and after and not much of the hard work. When I see these stories, I always want to know the actual plan. How many calories eaten a day, how much time doing exercise, how many months to take off how much weight? Peace.

I'm sorry but to have Star Jones on there the O show or any of these celebs in NOTHING that I can related to. First of all, Star cheated; she did the bypass instead of hard work to lose that weight. 2nd-Valerie and Marie are celebs. They can afford the $400 a month in food for Jenny Craig or Nutrasystem. Have you been to those website and see what the cost of food is? Its NOTHING that I can relate to. I cant afford a bypass (nor would risk it) and cant afford the other 2. I cant afford a chef or a personal trainer. O does well for America in many of her shows and some dont..this is a dont. All this does is flaunt the richness of celebs with the idea that when you are rich and famous, you can afford to look fabulous-otherwise your a schlep

HI,
This was a great show, different paths for different women, the good, the hard. Real life!! Love what Valerie has done to reclaim her power. I grew up hooked on sugar and it took a long time but I went healthy in the 70s and for years have been a size 6 and once in awhile even a 4! And I am over 50, postmenopausal, taking only natural everything, no drugs of any kind, not even caffeine thermogenics! I was decaffeinated in the 70s when I went healthy. My core is strong but I can do better. Valerie inspired me to do more ab work and stop tolerating those last few pounds that I don't need and that the dance studio reflects back to me when I swing dance. THANK YOU SO MUCH1

Yes this is a great show...

I wonder if the producers have ever thought of doing a show that exposed real day slavery in Mississippi...even in Orpah's childhood county? Can you believe it in the 20th century

Antoinette Harrell has done research and this would be an even better story!

Hi Dana,

My name is Antoinette Harrell, I am the researcher who did the research on 20th Century Slavery. Yes, that is corrected. I met a woman name Mae Louise Miller in Louisiana. She said that she and her family were held in slavery until the early 60s. After sharing her experience with me as a slavey, I started to research information on the subject of peonage and involuntary servitude. I purchased a book entitled " Peonage in the Deep South" by Pete Daniels, from that point I went to the National Archives in Washington D.C. to research the files on Peonage. I found that hundreds of thousands of people in sixteen states and twenty-seven counties held in slavery. Once I got into the files I found that black and white men were charged with false charges by the sheriff and constable in Kosciusko, Mississippi. Their labor were sold to the logging and sawmills in Zama, Ms. Some of them were sold to Clarksdale, Ms the now hometown of Morgan Freeman. Mae Louise Miller's story were featured on Nightline with Ted Koppel in 2003 and it was also featured in Peoples Magazine in 2007. I produced a documentary entitled.....The Untold Story " Slavery in the 20th Century. A book was published by Doug Blackmon, entitled.....Slavery By Another Name in 2008.

I love the fact that you have come such a long way. You now understand that you are responsible for your own life not your mother. It is difficult to admit you have control over who you want to be and it can be considered unfair. I know your sons are having an extremely hard time. Like I explain to so many others, moderation is the key. I think everything will be fine if you all focus on health and not just the weight. Appreciating the body you have and the way it works is the most important thing in the world.

Dana,

you guy's come up with some great stories it was good to see Valerie and Michael J Fox on the show. I have a great story for you. Life after being convicted of a crime you didn't commit and how to get your life back. That's my problem

Why are not you inviting the police spokesman GONÇALO AMARAL to join the family MCCANN interview? It's unfair, you producers are acting like politics and mafia ...
