Smelling the roses

Posted on Mar 30, 2009 4:29 PM

Hi everybody -

If you read my blog from last week you know 3 things:

thing 1) I like mint chip ice cream

thing 2) I like kittens

thing 3) I had a really tough week.

Several of you were surprised this blog isn't a sugar-coated description of life here at Harpo. We do have lots of perks here - no question - but putting on our show sometimes (like last week) was a tough slog. I wanted to write that blog smack dab in the middle of the mud because if you're reading this, I assume you want to know the real deal. Anyway, as I had hoped, the show was great. (We don't have an airdate for it yet - but when we do I'll tell you all about it. The show was about how people live and we profiled three VERY, VERY different lives...one of which I know will be controversial. But one of Oprah's missions - and my team's - is to open our minds to lifestyles different from our own - by seeing what we have IN COMMON. The hope is the more we can see ourselves in others, the less likely we are to criticize or even hate people for being different from us. )

We taped that show last week so now my team is in a bit of a chill mode. ("Chill" being relative.) The production teams generally work in two-week cycles. We get a show topic anywhere from 3 days to more or less two weeks out - and in that time we figure out how we're going to approach a topic and who our dream guests would be.

The first week is the slow one in the cycle - we're coming up with ideas and writing links for oprah.com specific to the guests we're looking for. ("Do you have a messy house? or "Do you have an unusual occupation?" or "Were you once married to a man but fell in love with a woman?" that kind of thing.) If we're not getting a great response on Oprah.com, we'll tap other resources looking for guests. We'll call contacts, support groups, experts, troll the internet, read newspapers and magazines. Then, we dive in and start calling. We'll often talk to dozens - sometimes hundreds - of people looking for the perfect fit. What we're looking for in a guest is pretty simple - someone who is articulate, thoughtful, HONEST, a good talker, with an interesting story. I've been doing this for a long time and I can often tell within 5-10 minutes of talking if I've found someone great. Most producers will tell you the same thing - you'll be on the phone for only a few minutes and - BAM! - you know you've found your Segment One guest. "She's great! Love her! Fantastic!" Before I was in my current job, when I found "the" person, I would run my notes into my producer's office yelling "I've got her! Our segment one guest. Love her. LOVE her!! Gotta book her, gotta book her, GOTTA book her! " and shove my notes under my boss's nose (still need to work on my delivery even now.) The thrill of finding that perfect guest is still there.

Thanks for sticking with me during my last tough week. This one has been great - and I'm back to eating almonds and I'm having a green tea right now...

Caroline,

Thank you so much for sharing a little of what goes on behind the scenes. Interesting!!

Teri

Ditto! It is so much fun to live vicariously through your stories. Thank you for involving us viewers so we can visualize one aspect of the MANY that it takes to make this show so great!!!!! You are fun!

Caroline I love the honesty and the realness of your blogs. I continue to look forward to what you are writing about. Glad to hear you are back to healthy snacks and happy days (smile)

Hi Caroline
What a great blogger you are. Thanks for the inside scoop.
Karen,

You mean mint chocolate chip ice cream isn't normal everyday fare? That must be what I'm doing wrong!

I know this is off topic but I am desperate for help:I need help saving a young man's life and his story will help hundreds of thousands. He like so many others suffers from severe treatment resistant depression which means there is no treatment available for him that has worked leaving him in a semi suicidal state every day of his life, until now. There is a device which can be implanted that sends a regular pulse of electricity to the brain and stimulates the areas that are imbalanced, causing the depression to resolve. This device has been used in epileptic people to help control their seizures and has been approved by the FDA for the last 4 years. Jeremy was authorized to get the surgery when all the sudden insurance companies stopped paying for it for depressed people only. They still pay for people with seizures. Jeremy, like so many people, needs this surgery and I am hoping we can raise awareness and funds at the same time to get Jeremy his surgery and the insurance companies to start paying for this invaluable treatment option.

Caroline, I really enjoyed your honesty and openness. I look forward to reading more. Thank you!

Dear Caroline,

Someday when you are sitting in your office wondering what your next story will be consider a story on Chrissy's Courage. My 26 year old daughter who died December 21, 2008. She suffered over six years after gastric bypass surgery. She lived everyday in pain because after the surgery she had malabsorbtion which led to many problems. In her short life she helped many people overcome problems and I would love to honor her story of strength and courage. As well as, tell her story to all overweight young people contemplating this surgery. Chrissy was a counselor and she was so good at it we didn't even realize she counseled our family through her final days and left us her strength.

Caroline - I'm so glad you guys started blogging. It just adds that personal element that people in this day seem to need. It shows you guys are real and genuine. I read your entry from last week and it hit home. I sometimes want to pinch myself because I'm so fortunate in my life and my co-bloggers at our travel blog. But, as we all know, we sometimes get stressed out and we do need that chocolate covered pretzel (or a glass, no, a bottle of wine) to share amongst ourselves and realize that things turn out okay in the end.

I don't comment on here hardly at all, but I just want to tell you thank you for the hard work you and everyone else puts into The Oprah Show and all things Oprah. I was fortunate enough to find myself on a Favorite Things episode (right after Katrina) and when things looked bleak around me, I got this gift of a little green laptop that changed my life. In fact, it has changed a number of peoples' lives. I've ended up taking it all around the world with me, and I do my best to show women out there that they can do anything, just as I am.

Thank you for the job that you do. You guys really make a difference.

i bet it's fun working there though like all jobs you get used to it and it gets old at times =). YOU'RE LUCKY - you don't have to work as an RN like i do and be totally overworked to the point of unsafety. i do not like my job at all =(.
btw i'm sending you an email =).

Recently Oprah did a show on Domestic Violence, She keeps makng the same comment on all of her DV awareness shows, she keeps saying the Victim allows themselves to be abused. As a powerful leader with alot of influence she should be more careful how she says this, it keeps the victims in shame and prevents people from supporting them. As a Victim myself I am deeply offended. I have spent the last 5 years hiding in DV Shelters in NY,TX, and Long Island,we stayed in 15 total. I have had 5 attempts on my life and with all of the hundreds of families I lived with I have NEVER heard one of them say they ALLOWED it. I am deeply disappointed with her lack of compassion. its the wrong type of awareness.

Hello-I watched both shows with Steve Harvey. I loved the conversation! I am 41 year old women and a much older women at my job brought the book to work and stated that it was very good and informational. Steve Harvey is very interesting to me, so i asked if i could read it. I brought the book home and my husband of 12 years said "Why do you have that book , you already have a man" i laughed. i think you guys should do a story on men affected by the new outrage about the new Steve Harvey book. i actually felt flattered about my husband comment, doesn't say much. But i must say he has the 3P's down pack...

Hi Caroline, mint chip ice cream is the delish!! Your blog post gives us all a glimpse of life-behind the scenes...I enjoy reading your post and appreciate your honesty. Have a good week.

I love and appreciate all of the work you all put into making the show a success. I just wanted to let you know that I am still waiting for my call to be a guest, lol. I was Eve, Nefertiti, and Mary Magdalene in my previous lives. I bring the Messiah as my Husband. God has also told me how to design the perfect vessel, that will save us all from the Galactic Superwave to come. Research me, and you will see that I am serious just like the other thousands of people know.

First, the reason why I like your blog is that it is REAL vs sugar-coated or vinegar-coated as we all know nothing is that Sweet OR Rotten ALL THE TIME right? that's just not how Life is so Thank You for your honesty.
2nd, you, me, and the majority of women are "Emotional Eaters". I am not overweight by any means but would lose the last 10-15 pounds if I could rein in my "emotional" eating. I am a SAHM with my own website selling toys but since that has not yet taken off, I have lots of time to play tennis :-) I noticed that when I lose an important match, I will OVEREAT A LOT. I think we both need to find low-calorie, Crunch snacks that will "trick" our palettes into thinking we are cheating. My first suggestion for you would be to have ONE 100-Calorie Pack of Mister Salty's Choc covered Pretzeld - too die for !

I will be completely honest, I gave up watching the show long ago. The last meaningful story you actually did was on the puppy mills. There are so many other stories that need this high level of attention. For example: They are using live dogs and cats as fishing bait in Reunion (French controlled Island), putting hooks in their snouts and paws, They are still rounding up cats in China and selling for meat. The World is dying, animals are being systematically wiped out, and becoming extinct. I for one could care less about someones makeover or a celebrity. I think you ought to do a whole other show to feature stories about the earth and planet... expose illegal animal abuses and horrific acts going on in the world. What good is our country and money, if our planet goes to hell??

I don't know how to really go about this. I have never even tried to ask a television host for help. but if you could just listen, i know that i am one of the many that ask for the same thing but if i could just be heard i would be eternally greatful.

My name is Dusti Hengstberger and my Grandfather(William Larry Hengstberger) just recently passed away may 9th 2009 and committed suicide in his own home. He was going through a rough time with a divorce and his soon to be ex wife was trying to take everything from him. It has been very strenuous on everyone in my family. worst of all I have never seen my father so upset, he was the one that found my grandfather.

I can't even imagine the overwhelming feelings that my daddy must have felt but I just want to be able to help him in any way possible. Now that my dad signed the divorce papers everything that my grandfather left behind is pretty much hers. She has already put his house up for sale and My dad and his brother both have to watch as there childhood memories get sold to complete strangers. If I had the money I would buy it all back for him and my Uncle but I don't.

I'm not the type of person to really ask favors but I have never wanted a miracle so bad in my life! So when I thought about it Oprah was the first person that came to mind. She has been such an inspiration to many and her selfless lighthearted actions have made it possible for others to sleep with a light heart at night. I just want to get my daddy and Uncle's childhood memories back but I cant do it alone.

I don't know if I will be heard but I'm praying like crazy that I will and I hope that if anything, she could make this possible for me and my family. Thank you very much and I hope to hear something soon. Sincerely, Dusti Hengstberger.

Dear Caroline,

I happen to have a great idea for a guest!

I recently read Oprah's interview with Michelle Obama, and her passion in supporting American artists. During this tough time, the arts are sometimes treated as disposable. But I truly believe the arts are a part of a culture¿s heart and should be supported to thrive especially during difficult times

I work at a fabulous company, Artful Home in Madison, WI. We are a small company with a big heart, driven by talented and passionate art and craft lovers. We represent over 1200 North American artists who focus on a variety of media: jewelry, painting, glass art, wearables, furniture and more. Founded by Toni Sikes, we are proud to be led by strong and driven women. Today our CEO is Lisa Bayne, who has expanded upon the company¿s vision to bring original artwork to anyone anywhere, whether it be a quirky coffee mug or a fabulous glass blown chandelier!

I have absolutely fallen in love with Artful Home¿s mission to support the arts. Now that I have found this wonderful company I want to see Artful Home and our amazing artists succeed in our mission!

Please take a moment to check out our beautiful website and our amazing artists. I think if you spoke with Lisa Bayne for 2 minutes about her passion for American artists you would experience the BAM!

Thank you for your time.

Vanessa
