Why do Breast Self-Exams?

Posted on Apr 29, 2009 10:11 AM

You may be thinking that since nobody in your family has had breast cancer, you do not need to worry about checking your breasts regularly. But this thinking is illogical becasue if you do have breast cancer, you will not know and it may develop into something less treatable. Remember, early detection saves lives.

The best possible reason for doing breast self-exams is that IT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE! By taking charge of your breast health, and doing regular breast self-exams, you are going to become familiar with your own body. Many women, especially young women, find cancerous lumps on their breasts months before their annual checkup and years before their first mammogram. The best thing about doing a breast self-exam is that it is non-invasive and FREE! At first, you may be uncomfortable and not know exactly what to be looking for, but with time you will be able to know what your breasts normally look and feel like (and be able to detect changes).

So check your breasts once a month, and have an annual mammogram to keep your breasts healthy :D

The Four Roadblocks

Posted on Apr 20, 2009 11:25 AM

Hey all,

Here are the four main reasons (Roadblocks) why women don't do what's necessary for their breast health:

FEAR: Many women are afraid of breast cancer. When it comes down to it, fear occurs because of a lack of knowledge. In order to get over the fear, you need to know the disease and take active steps in checking your breasts regularly.

DENIAL: Many people think, "This could never happen to me, I have no family history," or "I'm too young to develop breast cancer." Ignoring the possibility of the disease definitely does not prevent it. Remember, early detection is our best weapon against breast cancer, so take an active approach toward your breast health.

NO TIME: Everyone is pressed for time these days. Whether we have to have to drop the kids off at school, work extra hours at home, or clean up after diner, we are always wondering how we are going to get everything done that we need to do. However, checking your breasts regularly only takes a few minutes, and you only need a mammogram once a year. By staying on top of your breast health, you are saving MUCH more time in the long run, God forbid you ever have to face brease cancer.

LACK OF KNOWLEDGE: If you don't know what to do, or how to do it, there is no way you can take charge of your breast health. There is information everywhere about the disese, and what to do to stay healthy. It only takes a few moments to find the info, and once you know it you never need to find it again :D

So please don't let these roadblocks stop you from TAKING CHARGE of your breast health! Early detection is crucial, and can help save your life. Acknowledging the disease, and educating ourselves about what to do, is already more than half the battle. So take a few minutes for your breasts, and I promise you won't regret it!

The Four Gives

Posted on Apr 13, 2009 12:56 PM

Breast cancer has given me a new perspective on life. We should be cherishing our family, friends, simplicity and love! Here's some advice from me to you. I call them, the four GIVES:

1. GIVE up stress: stress compromises your immune systen, and inhibits your body's natural ability to fight disease and heal itself. Let go of all your stress, because life is too short to "sweat the small stuff," and it's all "small stuff" in the larger scheme of things!

2. GIVE up control: When you think about it, there's not much you can control. I can't control whether my cancer comes back. The only thing I can really control is my reaction to these things. Letting go and realizing that there are some things beyond your control really helps to reduce the stress!

3. ForGIVE everyone: You need to forgive everyone for everything; especially yourself. Not being forgiving is a huge burden to carry. Forgiving, on the other hand, is great for your phsical health and your relationships!

4. GIVE it the light touch: Humor is the BEST medicine! Studies show that humor releases physical and emotional tension, and that laughing increases many beneficial chemical reactions in our bodies that help to lower levels of destructive stress hormones. So laugh as often as you can!

Cancer has changed my life; in many ways for the better. Life is richer, fuller, and more precious than ever before.

Breast Health is more than just Awareness!

Posted on Apr 13, 2009 12:39 PM

I am the Good Health Fairy (GHFairy), the voice of breast health and want to bring hope, inspiration and power to anyone who has been disagnosed with breast cancer, is a survivor or feels strong about breast health. There are so many organizations that promote breast cancer awareness, but with women of all ages hearing those scary words "you have breast cancer":0 , we need to start promoting the actions necessary for prevention of the disease. I am co-founder of Beyond Boobs, a non-profit organization dedicated to saving lives by educating and encouraging women to take responsibility for their own breast health and to provide support for young survivors of breast cancer, nationwide.

Actions needed to stay ahead of the disease:

  • Pay attention to your breasts and to any warning signs they might be sending you.
  • Do monthly breast self-exams.
  • Get regularly scheduled mammograms.
  • NEVER dismiss a concern about your breasts.
  • Do whatever it takes to confirm that you are healthy.
  • Understand your risk factors.

So put yourself first and take care of your breasts as often as you floss your teeth ;)
