The New Subscription: Your Monthly Box of Yum

Whether it's a share in a CSA or a membership to the Jelly of the Month Club, getting a box of edible goodies every month is a great way to discover new foods. These new  subscription services bring everything from healthy vegan treats to the makings for a dinner party (even the music) right to your door.

Foodzie
Cost: $29.95 per month
How it works: There are 3 themes every month (recent ones: Movie Night, Tea Time, Date Night); you can pick or let Foodzie surprise you.
What you might find in a box: Small-batch kettle corn in flavors like black truffle and aged white cheddar; heirloom beans grown on small-scale farms in Idaho.

Healthy Surprise
Cost: $33 to $333 per month, depending on the number of servings of food (16 to 200)
How it works: The deliveries are all snacks, all the time--and they're also vegan and dairy- and gluten-free.
What you might find in a box: Chai-flavored almonds, chocolate macaroons, peach oat bars, freeze-dried fruit chips, goji berry/cacao nib/mulberry/pistachio trail mix.

Steepster Select
Cost: $17 per month
How it works: Each of the 3 pouches of looseleaf tea subscribers get every month comes with tasting notes and preparation suggestions.
What you might find in a box: Golden Monkey Paw, a black tea from the Wuyi Mountains in Fujian Province, China; coconut oolong green tea.


Love with Food
Cost: $10 per month
How it works: For every box of sweet and savory treats the company sells, they donate a meal to a food bank like Share Our Strength - No Kid Hungry.
What you might find in a box: Black masala chai chocolate bars, caramel-wrapped pretzels, goat milk caramel sauce, single-serving packets of almond butter.

Turntable Kitchen
Cost: $25 per month
How it works: Each shipment includes a limited-edition, hand-numbered 7-inch vinyl single with two tracks from an up-and-coming artist or band, a downloadable mix, 3 recipes, and the dried ingredients--spices, flours, grains, beans--you need to make the dishes.
What you might find in a box: Recipes from Jeni Britton Bauer of Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams to make, for instance, Strawberry and Buckwheat Shortcakes.
