Star Power: Behind the Scenes at Jennifer Lopez's Fashion Photo Shoot
Entertainer extraordinaire Jennifer Lopez helps the O team create some major glamour.
When hairstylist Ken Paves (third from left) arrived at the Meatpacking District warehouse turned studio where we shot "Jennifer Lopez Is in the House!", he found our eight makeover candidates relaxing and grazing on fruit and yogurt. But at noon, when Lopez showed up for her stint as surprise stylist, the set suddenly buzzed with excitement.
Lopez's engaging personality helped calm nerves all around. "The ladies never had a chance to be starstruck because Jennifer was warm and laughing," says Paves. "They were like old friends." Her rousing call to the group: "You ready? Come on, baby—let's do this!"
Lopez jumped right into dressing the women in her new line of day-to-night pieces for Kohl's. She switched up accessories and made styling suggestions to Paves and his team (J. Lo's signature sleek ponytail, anyone?). The hairstylist whipped recent college grad Andréa Masucci's crunchy curls into shape by adding face-flattering layers. And makeup artist Mally Roncal (above center, seated) played up doctor Julie Seely's blue eyes with smoky shadow and dramatic lashes (according to O creative director Adam Glassman, "No one does lashes better than Mally").
The day was hectic, but the mood was light. The makeover team high-fived the women after particularly model-like moments. If trophies had been handed out, stay-at-home mom Ping Qiu-McLamb would have nabbed Most Fierce. "Ping stole the show," says Paves. "She gave us 'fashion face' and hip pivots!"
Midway through the nine-hour shoot, O editor at large Gayle King popped in from the midtown studio where she'd just interviewed Lady Gaga for The Gayle King Show. "I wanted to tell Jennifer, in person, that we appreciate her making this day so special." With her thank-yous complete, King browsed Lopez's line: "I want these boots and that white coat—and that and that." But for King, the makeovers were the highlight: "Everybody has those days when you look and feel your best. Our women were all in that zone."
