This week's question: My knees aren't very good. Is there a way for me to get in some cardio without hurting them?
Aaron Guy: There are plenty of ways to incorporate cardio into a person’s workout if they have bad knees. This is a common question with many of my clients as anterior knee pain and knee injuries are quite common with the general population. My favorite non-impact cardio that burns a ton of calories are kettlebells. If you haven’t been exposed to this old Russian method of training than you are definitely missing out on some body changing workouts. Kettlebells have been around for hundreds of years but are making a major resurgence in modern day fitness routines. kettlebells may be intimidating at first and they MUST be done correctly to be effective. Check to see if your gym has a certified kettlebell instructor on staff or if they offer a kettlebell class to get you started. I witness people using kettlebells incorrectly on the gym floor on a daily basis. I can’t emphasize enough the importance of seeking out professional guidance when learning this fitness phenomenon. However, once you learn the fundamentals of kettlebell swinging the possibilities are limitless. Other options for low impact cardio are rowing, biking, swimming, and the elliptical machine. If you’re really looking for an explosive, fat burning workout however, kettlebells are definitely the way to go! Send in your questions for Aaron! |
