It goes without saying that Tim Gunn is a man who knows fashion. What you may not know is that he's also a genuine and kind soul with a uniquely charitable spirit. My team and I were lucky to spend some quality time with Tim after our taping of the Oprah! Makeover My Man show and words can not express what a delight he was to work with. Not only did he give of his time and expertise, he did it with a smile on his face.

I'm a gal who loves a good gadget. My flip cam is treasured. My TIVO is sacred. And, don't even get me started on my iPhone. Now, I have a new toy and I'm totally addicted. It's called a BodyBugg. Have you heard of this? It's amazing. It's a little sensor that you wear around your upper left arm that tracks how many calories you burn. At the end of the day you hook the sensor up to your computer and the data is dumped into a program that shows you minute by minute what you're burning. You also enter what you eat so that you can accurately track how you're doing. So, since my goal is to lose weight, I'm shooting to have a calorie deficit at the end of the day. Doctors say you have to burn 3500 extra calories to lose a pound of fat. So, since I'm eating around 1800 calories a day I need to burn 2300 calories every day in order to lose a pound a week. I have to burn 2800 calories in order to lose two pounds a week.

Yep, it's my birthday. I normally wouldn't mention it, but the whole getting a year older thing brings up one of my favorite topics of conversation -- cake. I love cake. Okay, okay, I love icing. Cake is really just a vehicle.

My challenge this year is to keep my birthday splurging in check. Thanks to some amazing friends the celebration is actually several celebrations spread out over the course of the week. Which, while super exciting, also opens up the possibility for some serious diet damage. I think it's important to give yourself some flexibility, and lord knows I'm a girl who loves a good splurge. But, I'm also a girl who has let past splurging turn into binging which in turn became 4 years of, well, nonstop eating. So, I need to tread carefully. In preparation, I'm monitoring my caloric intake carefully and spending some extra time at the gym. This morning I burned a good 600 calories doing cardio to help put a dent in what will inevitably be a calorie surplus come dinner time.
