Emotions and Politics

Dr. Robin Smith
As U.S. presidential campaigning heats up, those vying for the country's top job are under close scrutiny, but Dr. Robin says that doesn't mean a candidate shouldn't let his or her true emotions show. When Hillary Clinton became briefly emotional on the campaign trail in New Hampshire, some media chastised her for letting her feelings show. Dr. Robin says the fact that Hillary's emotion was treated as a weakness is wrong. "Whether you are a man or a woman, I want to know that all of these candidates are connected with the emotion of what they are feeling," she says.

Instead of expecting presidential candidates to express their sorrow or show emotion only in private, Dr. Robin says you should expect them to be 100 percent real, no matter the situation. "I want you to stand up right now and demand that the candidates—all of them, no matter what side they're on—that they begin to show us that they are worthy because they are human, they are real and they are authentic," she says.
