Living a healthy life should be a joy, not a pain. Dr. Oz talks with Dr. Dean Ornish, a world-renowned heart expert and author of
The Spectrum: A Scientifically Proven Program to Feel Better, Live Longer, Lose Weight, and Gain Health, about some of the key ideas behind his approach to well-being.
- Diet: Dr. Ornish says most diets fail because they focus on deprivation and restriction. Instead, approach food with an attitude of "pleasure, abundance and freedom," he says. That means choosing healthful foods as often as possible to feed the body and mind. "It's a spectrum of choices," he says. "To the degree you move toward the healthier end of the spectrum, there's a corresponding benefit."
- Stress management: It's not what we do that causes stress, it's how we react, Dr. Ornish says. Consistently practicing certain techniques such as meditation, yoga or prayer can help you handle life's stressors with ease. "They're really ways of quieting down our mind and body to experience more of an inner sense of peace and joy and well-being and to realize that that's our natural state," he says.
- Exercise: Dr. Ornish says working out shouldn't be a chore. Pick exercises that you enjoy doing and incorporate them into your daily life. Walking 20 to 30 minutes a day or taking the stairs instead of the elevator are also effective ways of moving more—and the health benefits are dramatic. "Little, simple things can make a big difference," he says.
