The Healing Power of Music

Dr. Mehmet Oz
Music can shape your mental, physical and spiritual well-being. For Warner Music Group's Kevin Liles, it was also his ticket to success. Kevin rose from intern to president of Def Jam Recordings in only nine years. Today, he is executive vice president of the Warner Music Group and has helped launch the careers of stars such as Jay-Z and Ludacris. Dr. Oz talks to Kevin about his book, Make It Happen: The Hip-Hop Generation Guide to Success, which chronicles Kevin's personal success story and is a guidebook for achieving a career and life you love.

Here are Kevin's top eight rules for success from Make It Happen:

Rule 1: Find your will—no guts, no glory. "Figure out what's fake to you, and what you're really willing to sacrifice everything for," says Kevin.

Rule 2: Do you. Be true to yourself and project that authenticity to those around you, Kevin says.

Rule 3: Walk this way: education, experience. "You have to have a formal education and you have to have the education of life," Kevin says. "What I learned on the streets helps me navigate myself through the business as much as what I learned in school."

Rule 4: Create a blueprint, but embrace change. "I truly believe there has to be a blueprint, and when you're young, make sure it's in pencil," Kevin says. "You will erase it!"

Rule 5: No job is beneath you. "I made 3,472 cups of coffee, and I'm okay with it," says Kevin.

Rule 6: Embrace the struggle. "Know that for every hard time, there's a lesson to be learned and there's a success story coming after that," he says.

Rule 7: Get connected. "Be a catalyst towards more opportunity and more access," says Kevin. "That's why I'm [where I am] today because I allowed myself to get connected."

Rule 8: Step outside your box. "If you don't feel uncomfortable, you're not challenging yourself," Kevin says.
