You know those little sayings mothers have been using for generations, such as "Were you born in a barn?" or "I don't care who started it"? These "momisms" seem to be universal and now comedian Anita Renfroe has found a way to bring those sayings together in a laugh-out-loud funny song. Gayle talks with Anita about her song, "William Tell Momisms," which has become a smash hit on the Internet.
Anita, a minister's wife and mother of three children, says her career as a comedian took off about five years ago, largely due to what she calls "estrogen-flavored musical comedy." She says creating a song using the universal language of mothers seemed like a funny bit for her comedy routine. "I just went to the stock-and-trade things, [such as] 'You're too old to act like this,' 'You are grounded forever'…all of the things every mother says," she says. She set her momism lyrics to the fast-paced "William Tell Overture," and the song "William Tell Momisms" was born.
Live audiences loved the song and Anita says she posted a video of one of her performances on YouTube as a gift to mothers everywhere. "I put it up on Mother's Day weekend, thinking, 'Well, if we get a thousand hits wouldn't that be great?'" she says. Three or four days later, the video had been viewed 5,000 times and Anita says moms across the country and national news programs started contacting her. "I was like, 'Are you kidding me?' I was amazed!" she says.
The success of her song has turned people on to her comedy, and Anita says sales of her CD Total Momsense are doing well. "I've heard from a lot of moms who say, 'I bought the CD, I am now playing it for my children when they wake up in the morning and I don't have to say [anything] the rest of the day,'" she jokes.
