When I arrived at the bar, my aesthetician sat me down and used a brush and dark brow powder to outline my ideal arch shape. She then removed errant hairs by flicking the tip of the planer against the direction of growth; unlike tweezing, this method removes hair at the skin's surface, not at the root. I held a hand mirror so I could follow along. A few painless minutes later, my brows were beautifully shaped, with no telltale redness. I was sent off with a planer to use for touch-ups every day or two, to carefully maintain the lines the aesthetician had created.
I haven't decided yet if I'm a convert—the hairs grow back quickly, so I have to razor (oops, plane ) my brows almost every morning. On the other hand, the technique does keep me from zoning in on each individual hair and losing perspective on my overall (now very precise) brow shape. At the moment, you'll find Christi Harris Precision Brow Planing Bars in Dallas and Houston, but the company plans to open dozens more in 2009.
