The Global Fund for Children (GFC)
The Global Fund for Children (GFC) received an Angel Network Award in conjunction with the Oprah's Book Club selection Night by Elie Wiesel. GFC is respected internationally for their work in advancing the dignity of children and youth around the world. They fund innovative community-based organizations that serve some of the world's most vulnerable young people. This year, GFC will distribute nearly $2 million in grants to 144 groups in 55 countries.
An important part of their programming is education, including developing books that teach children to value their own diversity and that of others. Few books for children depict a diverse world while promoting a consistent message of tolerance and understanding. With lively text and photos, GFC books help young readers recognize the similarities and respect the differences among children throughout the world. To date, more than 250,000 copies of GFC books are in circulation to families, libraries and schools, reaching an estimated 1 million readers.
Through their Books for Kids program, GFC delivers to teachers, parents and children books that disseminate critical messages of tolerance while teaching basic literacy skills. GFC has developed a system of distributing the books at the grass-roots level around the world. They send books two ways: through their global network of grantee partners, all of which are community-based organizations working with vulnerable children, and through international literacy organizations.
The Global Fund for Children believes that messages of tolerance are essential in rebuilding countries torn by political or ethnic violence. As the recipient of our $50,000 Angel Network grant, they will focus their efforts in these areas. Special effort would go towards reaching children in Afghanistan, Rwanda, Uganda, Sierra Leone, and the Middle East. The grant will put over 17,000 books into the hands of children in countries where violence and poverty have been the norm in their lives, preventing them from growing up safely, with hopes and dreams or a vision of what else is out there. These books will help to open windows on the world for these children.
