Literacy Action, Inc. (LAI) received an Angel Network award in conjunction with the "Hi Gorgeous!" 2004 tour. Established in 1968, LAI has worked to build better futures by teaching undereducated adults literacy, life and work skills.
The employment oriented educational programming empowers participants to reach their potential as self-sufficient individuals, parents, employees, citizens and lifelong learners. Included are instruction in resume writing, computer classes and life skills training, including job readiness. Professional instructors teach courses ranging from basic reading, writing and math to high school equivalency needed to pass the GED and be certified. Their 21st Century Work Skills Program helps participants to improve the skills needed to find and retain better paying jobs. On average, 70% of students who complete this program obtain new jobs or advance on their job.
In 2003, LAI served nearly 1,000 adults between the ages of 18–29; 82 students earned their GED certificate, and several received scholarships to attend community colleges and technical schools. In addition, LAI provides "Train the Trainer" classes for companies and agencies that want to initiate on-site workplace literacy programs for their employees.
President Mattie Eley has been with this organization for 22 years, and is responsible for the design and development of the nationally recognized program curriculum.
