In response to Hurricane Katrina, Oprah's Angel Network has given America's Second Harvest $1 million to purchase and distribute food to survivors in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee and Texas. Through this grant, thousands of people will have water, be fed and given toiletries that will hopefully give them strength to face the difficult days ahead.
Katrina Relief Donation Hotline: 800-344-8070
Every day, in all 50 states, America's Second Harvest—The Nation's Food Bank Network provides food to hungry people. It's the nation's largest domestic hunger-relief organization. Their nationwide network of over 200 regional food banks and food-rescue organizations serve every county in the U.S., as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. They establish and develop partnerships with companies involved in every aspect of the food industry, including growers, retailers and restaurants, and encourage them to donate food, not dump it. Outdated food is not accepted. The donated food is then moved to where it is most needed: local food banks and service agencies. These agencies then pass on the food and supplies to people in need at food pantries, soup and community kitchens, senior centers, homeless shelters and youth programs. America's Second Harvest provides emergency food assistance to more than 23 million Americans, including 9 million children each year.
